I must admit that I was slow to jump onboard the social network thing (is that a baby boomer mentality?), except for MySpace, as it has proven itself to be a way to market music to a wider audience (I was amazed with the scope of its outreach).
After being convinced by my kids that a Facebook profile would help in my marketing efforts, I set up a profile but was very lax in paying attention to it, mostly because I was unsure how to utilize it and not understanding it's purpose.
My aha! moment came while I was visiting my family in WA in June and finally had time to sit down and work on my profile and presto- the feedback was instant! It was great to be able to connect with people from the past.
One such connection that I am real pleased about is with Alvin Fejarang- Kalapana's original drummer and the studio drummer on Summer's "Summer In Malibu" album. I highly respect his musicality and drumming skills- one of the best, bar none.
It has lead us to begin collaborating on writing new material, stuff to be used on my next solo endeavor. It also makes for a convenient situation as he lives in the Seattle area- which I consider to be my second home- as I vist there often because of my 'ohana there.
The first song we're working on is a Latin/funk/groove that Alvin's been experimenting with. It has inspired me!
Tentative plans include sessions in WA when I plan to visit in December.
Solo project is in editing and mastering stage. It's like labor pains!
