DIY Mumming for the 21st Century...
Philadelphia's New Year's Day Parade is called the Mummers' Parade. Since the Dutch began to settle in this area in the 1600s, the Mummers, (Traditionally, but no longer exclusive to men) have dressed in elaborate dresses and costumes in celebration of the beginning of a new year. The Mummers are a local example of an ancient and widespread practice of designating New Year's Day as a kind of opposite day—men dress as women, and the poor dress like the rich and vice versa. One can, and does, get drunk and stay up all night any day of the year, but only on New Year's Day can he walk hand in hand with his plumber and his policeman down Broad Street dressed like a bedazzled Starfish.
This past New Year's Day, while trolling Two Street for the few Mummers we could find on a rained out parade day, our small group of friends envisioned that we might actually become mummers ourselves. With a little digging and perseverance we've discovered that this is an attainable goal, and we're determined to make it happen. Thanks to the
hard work, creativity, and generous cooperation of Space 1026 and extended family, this dream has quickly become a reality.
Although being a Mummer is nearly free, materials for our float and costumes will likely cost several thousand dollars. With a little help from both new and old friends we hope to raise the necessary funds through a series of entertaining events over the course of this year. Our brigade, the Vaudevillains have been welcomed with open arms by South Philadelphia's Murray Comic Club, and we too welcome all those with the spirit of Mumming inside them to join us with any aspect of this process—great or small—and best of all, in the parade on New Year's Day!
