  • Bio

Allan Fraser is a songwriter and performer who released two albums internationally on Columbia Records with his then-partner, Daisy DeBolt. He has played the Philadelphia, Mariposa, and Winnipeg folk festivals, appeared in concert, in major clubs and on TV and radio in the US, Europe and Canada, and composed and performed film soundtracks. He has worked with jazz guitarist Lenny Breau, singer/songwriters Jesse Winchester and Bruce Cockburn, and musical actors Cedric Smith and Tom Jackson. Many artists have recorded his songs, including John Oates, Tom Russell, Cal Hand with Leo Kotke, The Duhks, Cassell Webb and Penny Lang. When Columbia Records first released Fraser and deBolt with Ian Guenther in 1971, the New York Times praised the album. " ...Their songs reveal the subtle web of emotion that is usually suppressed in our day-to-day consciousness ... their lyrics are as dramatic and direct as finely spoken folk tales ... the record is a rainbow of human emotions ... With this range of feeling, dense imagery and unexpected depth, their words may well find a place in the oral tradition of poetry ... " http://weirdcanada.com/2010/09/depart ures-fraser-debolt-fraser-debolt-with-ia n-guenther/ http://fraserdebolt.com/index.html on April 12 2011, John Oates of Hall and Oates will release his third solo album, Mississippi Miles, and my song, Dance Hall Girls is the lp's finale. When Garrison Keillor's long-popular radio show on NPR, A Prairie Home Companion originated from Baltimore in February 2007, the song's refrain, " Is this the way it always is here in Baltimore ? " made the song a natural choice of repertoire so Pat Donohue and the Shoe Band performed it. This February 12, Garrison Keillor and Andra Suchy performed another of my songs, Waltz of the Tennis Players accompanied by The Guy's All Star Shoe Band. In October 2010, A Prairie Home Companion released a 4 disc music compendium of "significant performances from the shows early years 1974-1976 where Bill Hinkley and Judy Larson's version is perhaps the ultimate Americana interpretation of Waltz of the Tennis Players. Through last February, NPR played the track four times to a total estimated audience of 16 million. Tom Russell, the great master Americana songsmith, still offers his rendition of Dance Hall Girls on his Cowboy Collection, Song of the West, released in 1997 on HighTone Records. The Duhks included Dance Hall Girls on their 2005 self-titled debut album for Sugar Hill Records and the album was supported with a video of the tune that received heavy exposure on MTV. Cal Hand and Leo Kotke performed a haunting instrumental version of Dance Hall Girls on Hand's album, The Wylie Butler in 1975 for John Fahey's Takoma Records (now the Concord Music Group). Last May, Canada's CBC radio network produced a major 90 minute documentary for their series , Inside the Music. An Overnight Sensation: the Story of Fraser and deBolt considered the duo's style and decades-long artistic influence since the release of their two Columbia Records albums. http://www.cbc.ca/video/news/audiopla yer.html?clipid=1523523238 The shows producer was introduced to Fraser and deBolt's music with a recording by Philadelphia singer, Meg Baird (The Vespers) who released an EP with Waltz of the Tennis Players as the A side. Second Layer Records recalls, " we asked Meg to record something with a country-waltz flavor, and she courteously obliged us with a graceful and bitter-sweet cover of Waltz of the Tennis Players by the under-appreciated Fraser and deBolt. The mushrooms are growing in every new boot-print. My, my, my ... " Super record producer, Craig Leon, whose highly eclectic project credits include hit records for Luciano Pavarotti, James Galway and the London Symphony, as well as pop acts like Blondie, The Ramones, Shawn Phillips and legendary Canadian bands Chilliwack and Cowboy Junkies, thinks highly of Fraser's work with deBolt and compares their lasting influence to music over the decades to that of Howlin' Wolf and Carl Ruggles. A YouTube video of our appearance at the Philadelphia Folk Festival is drawing fervent reactions from viewers. Here the song is my Gypsy Solitaire. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF9y Hx7la9I&feature=player_embedded#at =29 Fraser is often accompanied by his life partner, vocalist/composer, Donna Louthood. For more than 30 years, his collaborator and partner, Donna was raised in Montreal where for several years, she was the featured performer on a weekly current events teen television show which also featured appearances by Malcom X, Larry Flint and other contemporary controversial figures. She has performed at Place des Arts in Montreal as a soloist and she performed as vocalist with Daisy deBolt for a few years after Fraser and deBolt disbanded. Allan and Donna have co-written several songs including Just Another Kind of Jesus, Say You Believe and Cliff's Tune. Together, they have played music on radio, on television and in nightclubs, schools, music festivals and concerts. She is an expert raku potter and studied fine art and creative writing at McGill University. They have 3 daughters and a son. In 2010, Fraser's daughter Kaya Fraser, recorded her second album with Austin, Texas producer and guitar virtuoso, Kim Deschamps ( Charlie Daniels, Blue Rodeo, Cowboy Junkies) funded by a major grant from the Canadian government's FACTOR program. Allan Fraser is a strikingly original artist whose work resonates with musical intelligence and passion. He is available for live performances. See his profile at acousticroof.ca

I hope all my friends will enjoy John Oates' version of Dance Hall Girls on his new album released today on Mississippi Mile. Yesterday, the album was the number 1 download on Amazon's Alt-Country and Americana chart.

WHILST MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS, HEAD UP HIGH, THOUGHTS SOLELY FOCUSED ON THE UPLIFTING MATTERS OF GRAVITY AND WEIGHT WHICH WERE TO BE MY SUNDAY SERMON: "ALBERT CAMUS VS ED WOOD AS THE GOSPELS WOULD DIRECT US" ... WHAT SHOULD SUDDENLY CROSS MY PATH BUT THIS INCREDIBLE DISTRACTION!  WELL, I TURNED TO THE CAB DRIVER AND SAID "WHAT HO, DRIVER!  TURN THIS VEHICLE ABOUT PROMPTLY!"  I SAT AND WATCHED FROM THE BAR, MY HANDS SQUEEZING MY RÉMY MARTIN - OH ONE AFTER ANOTHER AND ANOTHER - SPELLBOUND FOR HOURS ON END. MY LIFE IS NOW IN SHAMBLES, AS THERE IS NAUGHT BUT BROKEN-HEARTED GRIEVING THAT DRIVES MY SOUL TO DESPAIR AT THE THOUGHT OF THIS NOBLE CREATURE SWIMMING FOR ANYONE BUT ME.

OH CURSES. HAD I BUT STAYED ON COURSE AND DELIVERED THAT SERMON .

well, here ... see if you don't understand this miserable wretches plight.
