Bio
Emory Joseph's '03 debut album "Labor & Spirits" was a 10 song marriage of black and white roots sounds, offered by a mature artist who had obviously taken sweet time to get where he was. The songs range from simple and lush ballads about unsung love and wandering children, to greasy r&b rooted romps that celebrating everything from train sex, to the pure happiness only strong drink and stronger friendships can offer. Fred Dellar gave "Labor & Spirits" a four star review in Mojo Magazine saying, "..Kinda back-porch Randy Newman with an array of licks and fills that constantly surprise and delight." Barry Mazor said in No Depression "Labor and Spirits doesn¹t aspire to be a ground breaking record, but it delivers you to the ground tended by Jesse Winchester, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, or, for that matter, Buddy Miller a fine, fun place to be." Bonnie Raitt said of the artist and his album "Emory's the real deal..great singer, his range and chops remind me of Lowell (George); writes soulful, funky and beautifully crafted songs. Labor and Spirits is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time.. great playing, righteous, unslick production and a lot of sass and heart. I love this guy.... The Grammy Award winner went on to record "Trinkets" from the album for her latest release "Souls Alike" After performing in fits and starts for couple of years, both as a solo singer/songwriter and with his band Peccadillo, lanky, long-haired Joseph set his considerable producer's skills on another goal. In Spring of '05 he, with the core group of musicians from "Labor & Spirits" (T-Bone Wolk, Duke Levine, Jon Carroll, and Soozie Tyrell) and others - including multi-instrumentalist Larry Cambell and mandolinist David Grisman, recorded "Fennario - Songs by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter". "The Garcia and Hunter songwriting catalogue is amazing. They should absolutely be considered one of the best writing partnerships in history. I'd been thinking about the importance of doing this for a long, long time. And since I wanted to do a second album that showed more of the things I do. Fennario was just the thing, a real win-win. I think people will really love the album. It was a treat to make. And it will be amazing to see and play live."
