| Movies | Go here. | | Books | Go here. | | Heroes | I'd like to say that I have no dead heroes (as Herr Manson would say -- and that's always Charlie and never Marilyn, incidentally), but all of mine are indeed in the ground (save me, of course). One of my favorites is Henry Louis Mencken. Ol' "H.L." put it straight and never kowtowed to the dominant culture of what's "permissible" or, in modern terms, "P.C." If someone was "pecksniffian" or a "rapscallion," he called it outright. We need more men (and women) in our culture like him in that regard, and less "fer shizzle, my nizzle" and other trash-level attempts at insight.
I should probably also mention Anton Szandor LaVey. For all of the social lenience and expanded viewpoints that are so en vogue and taken for granted now, many of you should drop to your friggin' knees and thank the Black Pope for having the guts to put all of this to the fore and, inadvertently, making it acceptable to express numerous unconventional ideas and views without comparative fear of censure. He did what many of your sorry-ass, trust fund, music subculture-robbing selves wouldn't have the stones to do on your own. Yeah, you read that right.
Others, too: Nietzsche, Machiavelli, Jung, LeBon, Redbeard and more. Where are the Men of Steel in this world -- other than six feet under?
Lastly, I praise myself. I won't go into any sort of lamely provocative story but I fought, kicked, punched, and finagled my way into more than the lazy leisure class would even begin to consider, even if independent thought and critical thinking were to be dropped in their laps. When I take a rare look into the outside world, I connect on some level with those who also possess the temerity, ingenuity, and vision to do more than swallow societal pablum, take the world at face value, and consign themselves (yes, themselves!) to an existence of mediocrity and the rabid urge to hit that loathsome feeder bar numerous times in hopes of existential pittance. Thanks to me for not being you. |
