ROCK MADE FOR TEXAS
Shawn Fussell (pronounced Fuh-sell) is much more than your average singer/songwriter, although Rob Devine of Maximus Talent Agency (Gin Blossoms, David Lee Roth, Great White) has called Shawn's music “The Twenty-First Century ZZ Top”.
Step inside the room when Shawn Fussell is playing and you will be guaranteed a good time. When you witness this band, you hit the musical tri-fecta - great tunes, meaningful lyrics, and a stupendous stage presence. I dare you not to shake your ass and groove.
Vocally, Fussell exudes a confidence befitting a crooner of the highest magnitude. His velvety smooth delivery transcends genre. He can deliver with a Ray Wylie Hubbard-meets Ian Moore vibe (“Tulia, TX”) just as well as a doo-wop inspired love song (“Sometimes”) or a lover’s lament (“Don’t Look Back”) with ease.
As an instrumentalist, Fussell could easily step out and be a “guitar slinger” but he has smartly dedicated as much on his lyrical content as his guitar playing. “Having a great soundtrack is one thing, but if it’s filled with cheesy lyrics that no one can relate too its like having a Corvette with a 4-cylinder in it,” Fussell said. “Balance is the key.”
Shawn Fussell
Since Fussell moved from Sherman, TX to Austin, TX in 2004, he has been honing his sound and moving forward. He released an EP in 2004 (Back To Zero) that Dallas Music Guide’s David Utorka called “tasteful and compelling,” then a pair of live offerings (1994s Live & Acoustic(CD - 2004), and Live at The Texas Music Café (CD/DVD - 2005) and is currently working on a new release due out summer of 2008.
In early 2007 Fussell released his debut full-length Made in Texas. The ten-track manifesto is a genre jumping joyride.
Although the name of the CD evokes a “Blues/Americana” type thought, anyone who knows Fussell will know the title is a state of fact, not musical mindset. In fact, if he had to be compared to other Texas musicians, it’d be more Bob Schneider or Guy Forsyth for the ability to jump from rock to country to ballad to pop and everything in between and the energy of the live shows.
HEAR, SEE, SPEAK
In the last year, Fussell has been a road dog, playing featured on Local Licks Live with Loris Lowe on 93.7 KLBJ (Austin), featured on Playin’ The Dirt on 94.9 The Outlaw (Wichita Falls) and had their 2004 Live at the Texas Music Café live show featured on ME Television. Shawn is also being currently featured on Direct TV’s The 101. Their music can be heard on KLBJ FM in Austin, TX, KMAD FM 102.5 in Denison, TX, 102.3 Lonestar FM in Wichita Falls, TX, and on Radio Free Texas (www.radiofreetexas.org).
