Bug Prentice is a three-piece band straddling Oxford and London like some crazy bow-legged godzilla. Their influences range from Deerhoof to John Coltrane, via Woody Allen and Futurama.
You may recognise the many (well, three) faces of Bug Prentice: Stephen Gilchrist can be seen drumming in Jennifer Gentle and Queen Adreena, while Ruth Goller plays bass in Acoustic Ladyland and The Final Terror. Guitarist Ally Craig has also been known to play solo sets in and around Oxford.
From brutal guitar assault to sudden, precipitous silence; from all-out drum battery to bathetic handclaps. [They understand] contrast well enough to be witty with it.
~ Tom Parnell, Heavy Soil
Despite being released under Ally's name, 7" single Angular Spirals / Get What You Pays For is the first Bug Prentice record in spirit. Recorded at One Cat Studio in 2007, it features saxophone madness from Pete Wareham. You can read more or buy the single on Ally's site.
Believe us, we’ve listened to this single a lot, and we still find ourselves asking the same questions: What are these tracks about? Why are they shaped so unostentatiously strangely? Why are they so amazing?
