Bio
KSJO is the second-oldest radio call sign assigned in San Jose, California, applied to both an AM and FM radio station before the AM changed call letters to KLIV, leaving the 92.3Mz FM frequency to enjoy that San Jose "permanent fixture" identity of "KSJO" for at least half a century. Decades after KLIV had established its AM Top 40 identity, listeners would sometimes inquire "doesn't KLIV own KSJO?". It was originally actually the opposite: KSJO "owned" what was to become KLIV after the AM half was sold. The station began in 1947 as the only radio station in the US with an all-female staff. .... Prior to its rock 1968 identity as "The Light from Below" ("below the San Fransico Bay"...soon after Tom Donahue's first-of-this-kind of rock on KMPX in San Francisco), the all-female staff was playing jazz. 1968 KSJO was owned by SRD Broadcasting (Scott, Robert and Don). Scott was Scott Elrod of San Francisco and Don was Don Bekins of Bekins Van Lines. The previous simple female-sex-symbol logo morphed into a red-white-and-blue logo and bumper sticker, and the rock staff was all-male for years. .... The station's next owner was SRO Entertainment ("Standing Room Only") of Nevada. .... Through the 1980s and 1990s it remained one of San Jose's top 10 most listened-to stations thanks largely to the appeal of morning jocks Lamont and Tonelli and the fact that they were retransmitting their signal from 3 separate locations around the San Francisco Bay Area (Santa Rosa, CA, Walnut Creek, CA and San Jose, CA. When that duo relocated to KSAN-FM in late 2002 KSJO's ratings dropped. An increasingly large local Hispanic population and the rise of Hip Hop also contributed to declining ratings. .... KSJO is now owned by Clear Channel, which instituted its current Spanish-language, Mexican music format 19:00 PST 28 October 2004, after recent years of increasingly-hard rock. It had broadcast rock during most all of the previous 35 years since 1968 (with the single, brief exception of a period of Top 40 in the mid-1970s). The last song to be played before the switch was Wall of Voodoo..s ..Mexican Radio... This change was part of a larger initiative by KSJO's owner, Clear Channel, to introduce more Spanish-language programming into various markets across the USA. .... The identity used, La Preciosa, is also used by other Clear Channel's Spanish-language, Mexican music stations. .... KSJO is located at 1420 Koll Circle ..A; San Jose, CA 95112. .... .. .... NO MAS ROCK Y ROLL: KSJO, the San Jose rock station of 36 years standing, is no more -- not as a rocker, anyway. On Oct. 28, 2004, owner Clear Channel switched its format to Spanish oldies music. In the '70s, KSJO and the late KOME were the South Bay's rock radio powerhouses, but in recent years, KSJO's star has fallen. Two years ago, it lost its morning show, Lamont and Tonelli, to KSAN ("The Bone") in San Francisco, and, in the most recent San Jose ratings, the station ranked 24th, with only 1 percent of the South Bay's 1.5 million radio listeners. "Young males just didn't seem to be there in the same numbers as they were years ago," says Ed Krampf, senior vice president at Clear Channel. "Young kids are listening to hip-hop, or rhythmic, or Spanish music." .... Meantime, Spanish-language radio is on the upswing in the Bay Area. In fact, in the latest overall ratings for San Jose, where 38 percent of listeners are Latino, San Francisco-based KSOL was No. 1, surpassing KGO. It is, says Krampf, the first time KGO has been shaded in 20 years. KSOL also rates strongly in San Francisco, and will soon be joined by KBAA (93.3 FM), which is switching to Spanish-language programming. P.S.: The last English- language song on KSJO, at 7 p.m., was, fittingly enough, Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio." .... Sign the Bring Back 92.3 KSJO petition online by visiting ..HERE.. .... For future references: You can still hear a classic rock station that used to be in the Bay Area years ago if you live in the Sacramento Valley. Back in the late 70's early 90's, some of us may remember 97.3 KRQR. Well today, that same rock station is now 106.7 Z-Rock in Chico. Z-Rock can be heard from as far north as Redding and as far south as Modesto. Z-Rock is the Aggressive Perfector in my honest opinion and they can really bring some kick ass music. From classic rock like Led Zeppelin to harder grunge fuck music like Deicide and more. This station in it's past didn't have what it took to compete with KSJO or KOME, while it did last a long time, but has now taken a new approach and is kicking us all in the ass. I sincerely applaude KRQR for there advancement and staying true to the game. .... ..106.7 Z-Rock - KRQR.. -

Thanks for the Add. I was a KSJO listener for many years. It was the best Bay Area radio station until its demise. I still have fond memories of listening to Perry Stone and the Adventures of Condom Man. Keep rockin'!
