Hromovytsia Ukrainian Dance Ensemble's Blurbs |
About me:
Twenty six years ago, there was a dream. The dream was to form a Ukrainian dance company whose dancers would be proud of their heritage. Through dance, they would open the eyes of the world to Ukraine and the richness of its culture. They would dance with their hearts and souls, so that the fact that they were born in America, would not diminish their pride and national identity. This company would function as a family, where everyone feels as an integeral part. It would be a company that would last through many generations of dancers.
Hromovytsia is a dance ensemble based on talent, heart, and soul. Under the direction of Roxana Dykyj-Pylypczak, the group is comprised of over 50 dancers, a few who have been with the company since the early years, and some who are new to the world of Ukrainian dance. It is this very situation that makes Hromovytsia unique. The veteran dancers bring deep understanding, maturity and knowledge of not only dance, but of the group itself and each other. These characteristics intertwine with the exuberance, energy and youthful innocence of the younger members to preserve the roots of the past, refine the ongoing changes of the present, and inspire commitment and creativity for the future. Hence Hromovytsia boasts a 26-year history made up of unique choreography, varied styles of dance and diverse talent. It also looks toward the future that will continue to reshape the very definition of Ukrainian dance, deliver innovative works that will reach new choreographic heights and surprise and delight audiences everywhere.
The ensemble has performed throughout the United States and Canada, and in July of 2003 completed a 17-day concert tour of Ukraine, where it performed for capacity crowds in six different cities. Other notable accomplishments include multiple performances at one of the largest dance festivals in the United States - Dance Chicago in 2003, 2004, and 2005. These month-long dance spectacles consisted of 8 different programs, 27 different performances, 250 individual acts over 2,500 artists - bringing in an audience of over 16,000 dance enthusiasts. Hromovytsia impressed Dance Chicago spectators with several different appearances among professionals such as The Joffrey Ballet, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance, and the River North Chicago Dance Company.
The past few summers have been busy ones for Hromovytsia as it performed at a number of festivals across Canada and the United States, including the official grand opening of Chicago's Millennium Park, Canada's National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin, Manitoba and the Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival in Toronto, Ontario - boasting a weekend attendence of over 250,000 people. Hromovytsia spent Thanksgiving morning of 2004 and 2005 performing for over 350,000 parade-goers, and 1.5 million television viewers at the State Street Thanksgiving Parade broadcast live on ABC. This parade was nationally syndicated and available in approximately 90 million households. Hromovytsia is scheduled to make its third appearance in the Thanksgiving parade in November of 2006. In 2005, the ensemble revisited the Verkhovyna Festival in Glen Spey, NY in July and the Washington D.C. Ukrainian Festival in September.
In 2005, the ensemble helped welcome his Excellency President Viktor Yushchenko and his wife Kateryna to Chicago with a performance of "Privit" and "Hopak" at the Palmer House Hilton in front of a crowd of 1400. The dancers also presented President Yushchenko and the first lady with a traditional "korovai" and salt.
Most recently, Hromovytsia delighted audiences with its annual fundraiser cocktail party. These sold-out, fun-filled cabaret nights include dinner and a show with themes suchs as "A Night Under the Starry Skies of Paris", "From Broadway to Hollywood", and "What If?". This night allows audiences to see Hromovytsia spread its repertory wings and show its strength in non-traditional Ukrainian dancing in different styles such as, hip-hop, jazz, lyrical, and acting.
Currently, the ensemble is fundraising and preparing for its 17-day concert tour of Europe. They will be performing their "kick-off tour" show in April, and embark on their journey to Paris, Strasbourg, Munich, Padua, Venice, Verona, Florence, Siena, and Rome in June. There will be a total of four concerts.
A remarkable combination of dazzling choreography, exquisite costumes and individuals who love to dance makes the Hromovytsia Ukrainian Dance Ensemble second to none.
Stay tuned for upcoming performances and fundraisers.....
