In 1985 a group of concerned URI students set out to separate the campus ambulance from the URI police department, and make it it's own entity. By the fall of that year, with a lot of hard work and patience, the University of Rhode Island Emergency Medical Services came to be, and has served the campus community ever since. The University of Rhode Island Emergency Medical Services, (URIEMS), is a state licensed emergency ambulance service, staffed with students, alumni, and volunteers from the local community. We are the primary responders to all emergency calls on campus as well as a mutual aid ambulance for the surrounding community of South Kingstown.
URIEMS has a crew on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the school year. We ride with a maximum of four members on an emergency call, with at least one Rhode Island Licensed Emergency Medical Technician supervising the on duty team. Our members are scheduled to work between their classes and other commitments. In addition to volunteering during the daytime hours, several members work for the corps on night teams which are scheduled from 7 pm to 7 am, and sleep in our Headquarters, awaiting dispatch to any emergency either on or off campus. As the primary emergency medical service for the Kingston campus, we respond to a variety of emergencies within the school year. They can range in severity from ill students, who may need help at the campus Health Services building, to life threatening emergencies, such as respiratory or cardiac arrest.
Our service is committed to providing quality care to the URI campus community. Our Rhode Island Licensed Emergency Medical Technicians are responsible for providing training to our first responders in all aspects of prehospital emergency medical care. Our service provides training continuously to insure that we are fully prepared to meet any emergency that may arise. Training is provided by hands on familiarization with equipment, guest lectures from various fields, scenario based training exercises and real-time "drills", in which we orchestrate a scenario in a realistic training environment to give members a true sense of realism.
