In January of 2007, an entire strip of programming on WMNF was replaced. A strip of programming initiated on the orders of the Nathan B. Stubblefield foundation and formulated from exhaustive research and raucous community input sessions, purportedly designed to reach out to younger listeners. The decision to cancel the strip, after years of unfulfilled promises, neglected obligations from management, skyrocketing Arbitron TSL numbers, little or no outreach, and slowly advancing fundraising, was made over the holiday to avoid discussion and controversy. But more importantly, the thousands of faithful listeners of WMNF and the 11th Hour were given no notification or official communication regarding the status of this strip. A full 20 HOURS of WMNF's schedule were destroyed without so much as a note of explanation to the listeners, the volunteers or the community. Instead, small-niche programming was instituted in place of the much more promising strip that could have attracted multitudes of possible future listener supporters. These listeners supporters could have been lifetime supporters of WMNF. They could have been the future of WMNF. I am convinced that this was intentional. The 11th Hour was intentionally hamstrung by mismanagement throughout its life, and left in the dark before being executed. Even in the two meetings held to supposedly extract input from supporters, opinions of support, which were practically the only ones present, were overlooked while the Directives of the Board were blatantly flouted. WMNF does not apparently intend to allow young progressives a place at the table or on the air, and even when they take their place at the table on the Board of Directors, their work can be fruitless because of territorial refusal to fulfill occupational tasks by staff. Ultimately, the Station Manager is responsible for these actions. She was well-informed throughout that the Program Director repeatedly made untrue statements to the volunteers which resulted in disillusion and distrust. No effort to train Programmers of this new strip came about, even though several of the new Programmers had never had radio shows. Other older, experienced programmers were manipulated into slots in this new strip, with the promise that this was the only way to diversify the schedule elsewhere. Personally, this new strip was not my first choice, but I was informed that the existence of a new, badly needed alternative Hip Hop Program depended on me making this shift. Then, another commercially oriented Hip-Hop program was added to our schedule on Saturday night, further alienating young progressives. It seems that under current leadership, WMNF will act to decisively in order to prevent young people getting involved. Certainly, some of these mistakes can be attributed to misplaced nostalgia and just plain cluelessness. And, certainly, most of the staff at WMNF do their best to foster community involvement in any way possible, especially the newer members of staff like the Volunteer Coordinator. But the actions of the Program Director, Station Manager, and historically, Mike Hiers, belie true adherence to the Mission and Style Statements, and leave the young progressives that were involved, both in years prior to the existence of the 11th Hour, and during, with the knowledge that this is not our radio station, but we are allowed to join in. Ultimately, the Station Manager is responsible for this situation.
