About me:
Fall '09 :: Working for sustainable sequestration; on whatever will support this path into a sustainable future. .................In August (+editorial I wrote was published in local paper) ...........I also enjoyed all four days of a conference about biochar--the First North American Biochar Conference, sponsored by the Center for Enengy & Environmental Security, at CU Boulder--which brought together research, industry, and government experts to learn about the current level of theory and development in biochar science & technology. Since.....the conference, I have locally been informing various individuals and organizations about this new knowledge surrounding biochar and its benefits. &...........Playing with the little, entrancingly unique, gasifier campstove (that makes biochar) that I got last week at woodgas.com; but it's all part of learning about biochar: google TLUD ======================================== Summer '09 Two problems of Climate Change (one long-term & one short-term) both need to be tackled. Long term we need to cut CO2 emissions. Short term we need to draw down or sequester the already too high levels of CO2................ Synergized Solutions are the key to this & our economic, education, healthcare, energy and other environmental problems--these days. Meeting with politicians and groups, to point this out, is a good mission. Biosequestration of carbon is a short-term synergizing solution--that can help solve each of these listed problems, as well as global poverty and water-quality problems--basically helping with all the U.N. Millennium Development Goals. ========================================== Spring '09! Saving the world, one garden at a time. I finally got Al Gore's comments about biochar (I'm assuming that's the "new technique" to which he refers) transcribed and posted as my latest blog. Of course you can get his prepared statement online--where he talks about key points to a successful agreement in Copenhagen: ......................................... #3 (of 5) was: "The addition of so-called Carbon Sinks, including those from soils--principally from farmlands and grazing lands--with appropriate methodologies and accounting. Farmers, such as Senator Lugar, and ranchers in the US and around the world need to know they can be a part of the solution."

Winter, '09. Yikes! A whole year has whizzed by.... Well I learned more, and did my part blogging under various pen names. The future now looks brighter: Communitization ...for a "Healthy Planet" strategy.

Winter, '08. Thanks to Kindle (Amazon.com), the obvious solutions for Global Warming are verified (they knew back in '96); but new obstacles are revealed (measuring and accounting) with sequestering CO2 in soils. Synergy, solving lots of problems with just one solution, is still important; but I don't think the politicians get it. Exciting times, eh? Charting a New Course for Planet Earth at the Dawn of the 6th Great Mass Extinction Event.

Fall '07~ updates to come this weekend ~finally, BookTV transcript done (ONLY call-in with something pre-prepared!) ~update: Trials with space-heaters can validate the Buoyancy Theory for the infamous Shower-curtain Effect.......

Changing the Zeitgeist! Spring-Summer '07...................................... What's the deal with Global Warming? Really, Climate Change. ...many answers, but they aren't easy; so if you're interested.... I do enjoy writing (to a fault); and sometimes go by "SA" (as in "essay"). Seeya, SA..................................................................................

~Well, this below is old and lame (hmmm, sounds familiar); but we'll keep it for posterity. -Fall '06........................................................................................ ~I'm on a mission to correct a widely publicized explanation about why shower curtains billow in and cling to people during a shower. Scientific American magazine published an article back in 2001 about how someone figured out the solution to this vexing problem. The professor even got a prize [the IgNobel Prize] for his work. ~Wikipedia [see update below*] has an entry for Shower-curtain Effect. Of course it is based on the SciAm article. If you want to see my rantings on the subject, go to the Wikipedia entry and click on the "Discussion" to get to "Talk," for comments: by ~samwikster. [*update: Wikipedia has changed their article to better reflect the current state of understanding about this effect. It is no longer heavily based on the Scientific American piece; good going & thanks Wikipedia!] ~Well, I'm pretty sure that I have a better answer. I think Scientific American needs to publish an update regarding the Shower-curtain Effect. I'm trying to get enough information and observations to make the case that the effect is usually a combination of heating and vortex forces (with heating usually dominant over vortex). ~Shower-curtain Tech: Prof.SA
Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone with questions about any of my other interests...................... ~Also...let me know if you see how this will work. Through Soil Sequestration, Climate Change can be kept in check over the next 40-80 years, until the high-tech solutions kick in. This, together with Economic and Policy Reforms, can also solve other global problems (poverty, war, famine, etc.).............................. SOIL Scientist, Microbiologists, and Composting Wonks Welcome!
