The Bard Rocks's Interests
|
| General | MUSIC (traditional folk, traditional blues, yodeling, boogie woogie, old time country, Child Ballads, dixieland, Irish, western swing, classical, old time gospel, Hawaiian... all old stuff and darn nearly everything that is not rock or pop), and also good literature, house remodeling, backpacking, canoeing, caving, photography (check out my myspace photos!)... | | Music | Favorites are many, but here are some who have exerted an influence on my own playing, none of whom I have ever tried to imitate. But they have all changed my way of thinking or added new dimensions in some way: Jimmie Rodgers, Carter Family, Dubliners, New Lost City Ramblers, John Hurt, Pete Seeger, Frank Wakefield, Blind Blake, Johnny Cash, Etta Baker, Blind Willie Johnson, Patsy Montana, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Delmore Brothers, Maddox Bros & Rose, Eddie Arnold, Doc Watson, Golden Gate Quartet, Sam McGee, Kingston Trio, Merle Travis, Clancy Brothers, Uncle Dave Macon, Cisco Houston, Hank Williams, DeZurik Sisters, Roy Rogers, Merle Travis, the Bright Light Quartet, Bill & Charlie Monroe, Hoosier Hot Shots, Roy Rogers, Frank Proffitt, EC Ball, Mike Seeger, Tampa Red, Memphis Jug Band, Clarence Ashley, Grandpa Jones.... you get the idea, I could go on all night. And there are modern singers and groups that I like as well, another long list which I will spare you. I am an active listener as well as a performer. | | Movies | I see them only if they are really good - and so few are. And, in being picky, I miss some good ones. | | Television | The last program I watched was the resignation of Nixon, and that's the way I like it. There is too much to do of purpose in life to spend it just being "entertained" by the media. I'd rather entertain than be entertained. It's better to read good literature or play music than watch TV - any day. | | Books | Oh so many - 20th century favorite authors include Faulkner, Des Bernieres, Stegner, Twain, Steinbeck, Allison, Marquez, Lewis, Rand, Dickens, Rushdie, Sams, Brautigan, Kingsolver, McMurtry, Hardy, Wharton, Hemingway, Richtor,Tolstoy, Hegi, Davies, Russo, Boyle, Tyler, Dickens, Mistry, Cather, Oates, Salzman, Tyler, Egolf, Vonnegut, Mahfouz, Lahiri, Irving, Oates, Abbey, Proulx, Morrison.... there's no end... | | Heroes | None, but I sincerely admire Pete Seeger, Ellis Jump, Nelson Mandela, Carl Sandburg, John Quincy Adams, Edmund Hillary, Rosa Parks, Issac Asimov and so many others that braved convention or lived ahead of the curve -just what I'd do if I were not so conservative. And my friends are so sure I am a liberal. |

The Bard Rocks's Blurbs |
About me:
I am a songster, a bard - at least that's one of several hats I wear. I play many stringed instruments with stunning mediocracy, and do old time country, Piedmont blues, old time gospel, humorous songs, some with messages, a few that I wrote (anonymously of course, since I am a FOLK musician), Child ballads, Irish (with the Valley Bog Players http://valleybog/prometheus.to) and a sprinkling of a whole lot more, all in the traditional vein. And you may find me many places in and around the Capital District of NY - always ready to play and to entertain others. I also play with Smokin' Bill Ackerbauer as "The Bentwood Rockers" (www/.myspace/thebentwoodrockers). We do old time country, hokum, Piedmont blues, stuff from the early days of the recording industry.
You need to check out my website: www.thebardrocks.com - You will undoubtedly be amazed as well as edified and most certainly your life will not be complete until you do!
Other hats: I am an active outdoorsman, best known for my caving adventures. An ex-dairyman, I have sold farm and country real estate for decades. You'll find lots of real estate and musical info among my many eclectic blogs here. Also, I do adventure photography and speaking. And I read good literature. You will never find me bored. Life has been good to me and I have much to accomplish before I quit.
And I am proud of my family - 3 adult "children" and a long-suffering wife, who I still find wonderful, all of whom have their own accomplishments and interests and are making their mark in the world in their own ways.

Who I'd like to meet:
I don't have heroes and I do not try to imitate anyone, though at times I wish I could. Does that mean I'd rather BE a hero than HAVE one? Nah, I'm not the hero type. But there are plenty of folks that I have reasons to admire, too many persons and for too many different reasons to ever think of listing them all. That said, I'd love to connect with others of similar musical tastes and skills for regular practice and performance.
