Movies
I was a film major so this is hard. Film is more of a curiousity to me. There is no telling what facet I may become interested in. for example, in the past I've had sudden interests in silent films (especially from Germany), films by and about women, film noir, Third Cinema, literary adaptations, the German New Wave, Chinese films in the 80's- to early 90's, the representation of class, gender and social issues etc. All that film studies training.
So this should represent: I could watch these lots:
Sunset Boulevard, The Piano, Aguirre The Wrath of God, Rate it X (awesome documentary about our raunch/porn culture and how it effects women made back in the 80's) Heavenly Creatures, Beyond Beats and Rhymes (documentary), Ali: Fear Eats The Soul, Waiting for Guffman, Taxi Driver, Terms of Endearment, Born in Flames, All About Eve, Nosferatu (silent), Faust (silent), Bette Davis films like The Petrified Forest (screen divas in general), The Red Shoes, Roger and Me, Woody Allen films, Holy Smoke, Raise The Red Lantern, Beyond Silence, The Corndog Man, Wuthering Height, The Battle of Algiers, Clue, Lilja 4-Ever, Harold and Maude, The Sound of Music, Moulin Rouge, Iron Jawed Angels, Persona, Seven Beauties, I Shot Andy Warhol, Open Hearts, Desperatly Seeking Susan, Battleship Potempkin, Moolade, An Angel at my Table, The Mother, Rosenstrause, Z, Born into Brothels, 9 to 5, Say Anything, My Own Private Idaho, Attack of the 50 Ft Woman (both versions), Broke Back Mountian, The Accused, Sense and Sensibility, Water, All That Heaven Allows, Marie Antoinette, Far From Heaven, Vertigo, Maya Deren shorts, Monster, Sister My Sister, lots and lots of other great stuff.

About me: "I adore anything to do with the arts" as Juliette Hume said in the film Heavenly Creatures. I have to agree with her.
Anyway, I'm a kick ass gal and radical feminist who believes in social justice, equality for women and keeping that inner child alive!

Activists, artists, feminists, and you!
I remembered you had mentioned during Cannes a couple of the actresses that I'd not heard of but I finally saw one of the films you mentioned with Isabelle Huppert The Piano Teacher. Quite a sick film. I've seen several 'sick' films recently. This is the sort of film that is well made but I'm not sure how I feel about it. What were your thoughts on it? Also, I did see the Anti-Christ lately, yet another film that depicts female self-mutilation. It wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be but I really don't 'get off' on seeing women hurt themselves or being hurt. I've definitely seen the last film I will ever dare to watch by Catherine Breillat. I managed to see through Fat Girl but could not make it totally through Anatomy of Hell. I'm not sure what her agenda is but my stomach is not up through such drivel. I would be interested in your thoughts of Bright Star when you get the chance even though it's not come here and probably won't unless it is nominated for Oscars. Also, let me know how the Munro book went when you get the chance. I have no idea how far along Jane is on either of the projects I've heard about but I certainly hope it's not another 4 year wait! Take care. A.
I was just listening to Tori Amos and thought of you. How's it going? I'm fine - preparing myself for the hardest semester yet. Hope you're doing well. :)
I saw that book and I believe it's title is Runaway. I'd already had some books and did not pick it up though. I definitely would like to read it! For some reason, I thought you'd already read that story! Let me know if you do. I always value your opinion. Thanks for the blog comment! Adriane
Hey there Gretchen! I'm so glad you got to see the film and even happier that you enjoyed it! No, I've not seen it yet! It's not come to my hometown and probably won't unless it is nominated for Oscars. I hate to wait that long to see it! I may end up having to make a nice long drive to another town to see it! Take care of yourself and thanks for writing! A.
The link you sent me of the dress by Charlotte that has been preserved, did not work. You must have been logged onto AOL at the time and it will not let me access it w/o your information. Sounds interesting. Would love to see it.
Which part of Tennessee did you go to? You may have been nearby! yes, unfortunately I knew about Portrait of a Lady being out of print! It's a shame. It's hard to come by it on dvd. I still have it on VHS. I believe that film was unfairly critisized when it was released. I believe someday it will be more appreciated than it was during its release. Glad you had a great birthday! Adriane
I continue to be amazed by how women are non-supportive of other women in life in general. Do you find this to be the case in your feminist studies? I appreciate your blog comment. It certainly clears up in my mind why the outcome as it was. For some reason, I was hoping sense Robin Wright was going to be on the jury that this was a good thing because I felt her selections would be good ones. I am saddened that these types of films were chosen to begin with! How many films do they have to select for the Golden Palm award to begin with? I would think heaps! I do believe the consensus was that this was one of the worst years at Cannes for selection as well as prizes. I was sort of pissed when a reviewer mentioned he was disappointed with Jane's film in the sense he expected more than flowers and butterflies from one of the top directors...Well, Jane has offered more than flowers and butterflies in her last couple of films and they weren't received well! I have no idea what anyone wants anymore from films but it doesn't seem to be quality, not in this country anyway! Keep up the good work! Adriane
Yeah, I was disappointed. The film was very well received and I was really surprised it won nothing! :( I'm trying to be optimistic though since most of the reviews seemed positive...yeah, I'm really surprised some of those films were even choseen!

Alright :( Well, ask anyone you think is wanting to move closer to columbia or if you think they know anyone that is wanting to move. I'd definitely appreciate it.
It would most likely be in the same one I have right now.. My dad is thinking about buying a condo here, instead of renting, so it would still be in the building, but it will most likely be in this same unit.
