Am I lucky being born in Kazakhstan? I am a child of
this land, heir of my predecessors, an admirer of its
nature and a fan of its millennial culture.
The mother has a very special role in Central Asia and
mine has even larger significance for me. She is a
talented clothing designer and a tailor with an
artistic comprehension of inner beauty, shapes, and
dynamics that comes to life in her beautiful
creations.
Then there are my teachers, who influenced my whole
life. Music is an integral part of my life. When I
was a child I studied guitar with the best teacher in
town and won the first prize in the national
competition.
Soon after I had the chance to be student of Khalfin
– one of the big names in the Kazakh painting. Working
with him was for me a
challenge and a way to discover art within myself and
find my own place in the art world.
Than there’s "The Land", Almaty is between the large
steppe and the highest mountain. Because of that the
town has unique sense of eternity that led me to find
art in every single plant, rock, cloud or a lonely
flying bird flying in the sky. The ridges were luring
me.
Kazakhstan is multinational state. Almost all major
religions are practiced there. Civilization identity
is increasingly important, as Samuel Huntington said
in Clash of Civilizations, but I do not agree that the
differences among cultures are a ground for clashes
and conflicts, rather I believe they create a unique
opportunity for mutual understanding. I would give
two examples: First, a Russian scholar wrote down the
songs of the great Kazakh popular poet Dzhambul. He
not only knew the language; he entered deep in the
soul of the artist and the Kazakh culture. The second
example is me: I am not a Kazakh by race, but I have
always been interested in the local history and
customs as emanation of the human life and I studied
hard all available sources in the library. Knowledge
does not substitute for feelings and emotions, but it
helps to find the right explanation and to see beyond
the visible and extend the horizon. This was the way I
made my first movies in co-operation with Khalfin.
My next project is a video art piece entitled “Star
Nomads”. It investigates how everything that is
happening in the Universe has its reflection on the
Earth. Any events on Earth are nothing, but traces,
energy, left in space and in time. Through the idea of
unity between the Nomad and his horse emerge war,
love, jealousy and passions. Love is at the same time
a question and an answer. We need to ask and reply to
it
every day, and the outcome is always different.
My realization of this idea and my vision to capture
it on film has given me the opportunity to discover,
rediscover and explore the hidden feelings and
possibilities of human life. Currently I am seeking a
creative team of talented individuals interested in
exploring my vision and helping me bring it to life by
turning a moment in space into eternity in art.
