BGM, that's basically it. Rock seems appealing as well.
Movies
no preferences here, as long as it's not some overly hyped up emotional crap...here's to you, Disney!
Action films are nice, as long as they're not too cheesy (Nuke the fridge!...not that any other bit of that particular movie was bad, mind you)
Television
Court TV, House, Sci-Fi channel, South Park, CSI...although I only use it as a backdrop to whatever I'm doing.
Most of the stuff I actually watch is flash movies on Newgrounds or Let's Plays on Youtube. Other people being frustrated is refreshing.
Books
Leviathan, anything by Piers Anthony, Terry Prachett, and Margaret Weis.
More-or-less anything fantasy or sci-fi, or even both.
