Mark Joseph's Interests
|
| General | This could be a long list, but in no particular order:- I have five sons, and am very interested in them. I hope they will soon all appear in my friends lists, because we have good relationships generally and I enjoy their company.
- Perhaps I should first have said that I am married to the most wonderful woman in the world; but as she shares my interest in our sons, I don't think she'll be too upset that I named them first.
- I've been involved in one way or another in Christian ministry for a long time, beginning with Christian rock bands back in the early 1970s, presently as author, teacher, and chaplain of The Christian Gamers Guild, and still doing music when I can.
- Ah, yes, I am a musician. I play more instruments than I have fingers, and have forgotten more of my songs than I remember but still remember more than I can play for you in an afternoon. With the current band, 7dB, I'm playing guitar, bass, keyboard, and flute, in addition to singing lead and backup vocals and doing all the arrangements of the eighteen-song repertoire, a third of which I wrote.
- And I've already mentioned writing, with several books in print including a fantasy novel and a role playing game and a book on Christian living (how's that for an unlikely combination?). I've also got articles on a dozen web sites apart from my own, most but not all of them roleplaying game related.
- Which leads naturally to my interest in role playing games. I run a Multiverser game six days a week at The Official Multiverser Forum at Gaming Outpost.
- I have degrees in theology and law, so apparently I have interests there. I have award-winning web sites about time travel and Dungeons & Dragons™, so those also reflect my interests.
I'm a very eclectic sort of person, so it's difficult to make a list like this--but there it is. | | Music | Oh, I'm very fond of my own music, which ranges a bit but mostly comes across in the light rock vein.
Again, I have eclectic tastes. Having grown up playing music, I love many of the classics--the oratorios and masses of composers including Bach, Mozart, Mendelsohn, Haydn--but also have an appreciation for modern music, most especially the choral works of Randall Thompson but also people like Ives and Poulenc. I enjoy instrumental jazz, and sometimes scat singing, but haven't spent much time listening to it of late.
When I have opportunity, I listen to Petra, Skillet, Love Song, Marty McCall, and Steve Taylor, mostly, but I don't have a lot of music in current formats--I had a decent record collection once, but when I didn't have a turntable I misplaced the disks, and I really only get a chance to listen in the car anymore, so records aren't terribly useful.
I listen to my own recordings fairly frequently, which irks some people, but at least I like my stuff. | | Movies | Although I have a web site which analyzes Temporal Anomalies in Popular Time Travel Movies, my preferences run more toward the action pictures, particularly those with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, because of their ability to toss in the throwaway humor in the midst of the action. On the other hand, my top three favorites are The Last Starfighter, A Fish Called Wanda, and True Lies, so again my tastes seem to be eclectic. | | Television | I don't usually make time for television, but I try to catch Dr. Who, Monk, House (only on USA--for some reason I rarely watch anything on the major networks anymore), and that new one, Psych. I'll also watch any of the CSI shows, the Law and Order stuff particularly Criminal Intent, and a lot of the PBS Mystery series. I use to watch a lot more sci-fi than I do now, because I'm not really into horror or sci-fi thriller all that much, and it's rarely well done, and that's usually what's on. I have a lot of cult faves, like Love and Curses, but you never see them anymore. I'll watch most Britcoms and almost no Sitcoms, and I can put on educational television like PBS or History Channel or TLC or Discovery for hours when I'm bedridden or something. | | Books | I have read too many books to list; but I'll use this space to tell you about the ones I've written, in the order in which I wrote them.- Multiverser: The Game: Referee's Rules, co-written with E. R. Jones, is the core rule book of the best roleplaying game out there, at least according to some of its fans. It takes you, as yourself, out of your own world and tosses you into any world you can imagine, moving you from one to another. Ron Edwards (of Sorcerer fame) said it had some of the best answers to the problem of character death, because the death of your character means you start a new chapter with the same character in a new world. Follow the link to read more.
- Multiverser: The First Book of Worlds, also co-written with E. R. Jones and with a collaborative contribution from Richard Lutz, gives nine different adventure settings for that game. Justin Bacon, who had reviewed the rule book for RPGnet, said when he turned to the worlds book he was amazed at just how daring and different the game was.
- Multiverser: The Second Book of Worlds, this time in collaboration with Dimitrios "Jim" Denaxas, continued the legacy of the game, with nine more really different ideas for game worlds in which to play. There's another in this series coming, with lots more ideas in the years ahead.
- Verse Three, Chapter One: The First Multiverser Novel is my foray into fantasy/science fiction writing. It got good reviews from those who read it, and I'm expecting the story to continue in Old Verses New fairly soon.
- What Does God Expect? A Gospel-based Approach to Christian Conduct is my most recent release. I have high hopes for it, and more books coming along in this vein as well.
I'd be pleased to hear comments about any of these. | | Heroes | My Father, Cornelius Bryant Young, Jr. In the fifty years that I have known him, I have not known him to lose his temper as many times, and that has always impressed me. |

Mark Joseph's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm best known for co-authoring Multiverser: The Game and its related books (under the name M. Joseph Young), but I've also written other books and several hundred articles about role playing games, Christian faith, and a myriad of other subjects (some of them as Mark Young or Mark J. Young or simply M. J. Young). You can find my books on my web site, and my blog at Gaming Outpost, which is also where the Official Multiverser Forum is, which is probably the quickest way to contact me.
