    Mark Joseph's Interests
GeneralThis could be a long list, but in no particular order:
  • I have five sons, and am very interested in them.  I hope they will soon all appear in my friends lists, because we have good relationships generally and I enjoy their company.
  • Perhaps I should first have said that I am married to the most wonderful woman in the world; but as she shares my interest in our sons, I don't think she'll be too upset that I named them first.
  • I've been involved in one way or another in Christian ministry for a long time, beginning with Christian rock bands back in the early 1970s, presently as author, teacher, and chaplain of The Christian Gamers Guild, and still doing music when I can.
  • Ah, yes, I am a musician.  I play more instruments than I have fingers, and have forgotten more of my songs than I remember but still remember more than I can play for you in an afternoon.  With the current band, 7dB, I'm playing guitar, bass, keyboard, and flute, in addition to singing lead and backup vocals and doing all the arrangements of the eighteen-song repertoire, a third of which I wrote.
  • And I've already mentioned writing, with several books in print including a fantasy novel and a role playing game and a book on Christian living (how's that for an unlikely combination?).  I've also got articles on a dozen web sites apart from my own, most but not all of them roleplaying game related.
  • Which leads naturally to my interest in role playing games.  I run a Multiverser game six days a week at The Official Multiverser Forum at Gaming Outpost.
  • I have degrees in theology and law, so apparently I have interests there.  I have award-winning web sites about time travel and Dungeons & Dragons™, so those also reflect my interests.
I'm a very eclectic sort of person, so it's difficult to make a list like this--but there it is.
MusicOh, I'm very fond of my own music, which ranges a bit but mostly comes across in the light rock vein. Again, I have eclectic tastes.  Having grown up playing music, I love many of the classics--the oratorios and masses of composers including Bach, Mozart, Mendelsohn, Haydn--but also have an appreciation for modern music, most especially the choral works of Randall Thompson but also people like Ives and Poulenc.  I enjoy instrumental jazz, and sometimes scat singing, but haven't spent much time listening to it of late. When I have opportunity, I listen to Petra, Skillet, Love Song, Marty McCall, and Steve Taylor, mostly, but I don't have a lot of music in current formats--I had a decent record collection once, but when I didn't have a turntable I misplaced the disks, and I really only get a chance to listen in the car anymore, so records aren't terribly useful. I listen to my own recordings fairly frequently, which irks some people, but at least I like my stuff.
MoviesAlthough I have a web site which analyzes Temporal Anomalies in Popular Time Travel Movies, my preferences run more toward the action pictures, particularly those with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, because of their ability to toss in the throwaway humor in the midst of the action.  On the other hand, my top three favorites are The Last Starfighter, A Fish Called Wanda, and True Lies, so again my tastes seem to be eclectic.
TelevisionI don't usually make time for television, but I try to catch Dr. Who, Monk, House (only on USA--for some reason I rarely watch anything on the major networks anymore), and that new one, Psych.  I'll also watch any of the CSI shows, the Law and Order stuff particularly Criminal Intent, and a lot of the PBS Mystery series.  I use to watch a lot more sci-fi than I do now, because I'm not really into horror or sci-fi thriller all that much, and it's rarely well done, and that's usually what's on.  I have a lot of cult faves, like Love and Curses, but you never see them anymore.  I'll watch most Britcoms and almost no Sitcoms, and I can put on educational television like PBS or History Channel or TLC or Discovery for hours when I'm bedridden or something.
BooksI have read too many books to list; but I'll use this space to tell you about the ones I've written, in the order in which I wrote them.
  1. Multiverser:  The Game:  Referee's Rules, co-written with E. R. Jones, is the core rule book of the best roleplaying game out there, at least according to some of its fans.  It takes you, as yourself, out of your own world and tosses you into any world you can imagine, moving you from one to another.  Ron Edwards (of Sorcerer fame) said it had some of the best answers to the problem of character death, because the death of your character means you start a new chapter with the same character in a new world.  Follow the link to read more.
  2. Multiverser:  The First Book of Worlds, also co-written with E. R. Jones and with a collaborative contribution from Richard Lutz, gives nine different adventure settings for that game.  Justin Bacon, who had reviewed the rule book for RPGnet, said when he turned to the worlds book he was amazed at just how daring and different the game was.
  3. Multiverser:  The Second Book of Worlds, this time in collaboration with Dimitrios "Jim" Denaxas, continued the legacy of the game, with nine more really different ideas for game worlds in which to play.  There's another in this series coming, with lots more ideas in the years ahead.
  4. Verse Three, Chapter One:  The First Multiverser Novel is my foray into fantasy/science fiction writing.  It got good reviews from those who read it, and I'm expecting the story to continue in Old Verses New fairly soon.
  5. What Does God Expect?  A Gospel-based Approach to Christian Conduct is my most recent release.  I have high hopes for it, and more books coming along in this vein as well.
I'd be pleased to hear comments about any of these.
HeroesMy Father, Cornelius Bryant Young, Jr.  In the fifty years that I have known him, I have not known him to lose his temper as many times, and that has always impressed me.

i dont really know what i find stimulating anymore, i've never really had any hobbies other than watching movies, but then, i'm just watching movies and as an artist, or future artist... i should be making them, or making something. if you havent seen the movie Waking Life, you should. it's very existential.

even when i take the time though, it feels like it's rushed because i _have_ to do something like cleaning. cleaning has definately taken a backburner, it's not working out so well for me. which is bad because now i'm super obligated instead of being able to do it superficially every now and then. sigh! i think it's time to do something stimulating.

Hello. sorry it's taken me so long to comment back. i have no internet and my time on the internet is usually very short. I'm glad to know that mostly everything is going well. I think i've fallen out with most of the family that you've mentioned. time heals all wounds, i'm sure.
speaking of time, I've not really had summer yet until now, and i still have to get things sorted for next year. busy summer for me. i think i might end up having art history as a minor, maybe not if i want to be alive at my graduation.

Hey there Mr. Young!
I was browsing myspace and I started reading the conversation you and Baxter were baving about a band myspace. I wanted to tell you that when/if you do decide to proceed with the idea I would be happy to help with it. I'm on my computer at least once a day and i'm always checking myspace. Sometimes I check it a little too much :o). I also like to dabble around with html codes and such.
I also do apologize for the two days that I am missing practice. I will be back for practice on the 19th.
Take care and God Bless.

I know I am a few days early on this, but I just wanted to stop by and wish you a happy birthday while I have a moment. I admire your spirit and ability to be so unique. Most people settle in their lives but it seems that you've followed your interests without falter, for that I praise you now and hope you're doing as well as your page suggests.

I think in a sense it may be a good idea due to the fact that early friends who heard us can see us improve as a band and see the potential we have before we go "touring" haha. It would give us a few potential fans before we play our first shows. But most importantly, they know that we will be a great band and they can decide if they like us or not before they come to see us play. I would like to head the site if necessary but my Html skills are lacking at best. I'm not sure how we would get the music up either...unless of course we could access a faster modem. I have a program that works but, im not sure how reliable it is. It does however, record live music which is a big plus.

Do You think we should give a Bandspace for Collision a shot? It would be a great way to Network the band and more people will have heard of us before we play concerts.

Oh, and the "human gift" I gave you was Valdron, Inc.
I thought it was fitting ^_^

May 22 2008 5:23 AM

Oh, it's just a myspace game application, you earn money for inviting people/gifting people/posting bulletins, and you can use money to buy friends from other people. You can install it to see how much money you have, who owns you, and who you own, but I wouldn't consider it a requirement, just another distraction.
