The Brunswick Brickworks, in Melbourne's inner-northern suburbs, was in operation from 1884 to 1993. Half the site has been redeveloped into modern apartments with only a single brick chimney preserved to fulfill heritage-listing requirements. The other half, where the filming took place, awaits a similar redevelopment. Armed with three acoustic instruments – accordion, voice and saxophone, we arrived before the sun and traffic, to spend the morning playing throughout the kiln as it slowly filled with light. We made solo, duo and trio groupings, giving us space to listen to and embrace the energy in the Brickworks.
