Music
Typically, people create a list of artists whose music they enjoy, but I've found that keeping such a list is problematic for me because I constantly discover new music, mostly by recommendation of Bryan Brown, through iTunes, or on Pandora.
My all-time favorite band is Why? Other favorites include TV on the Radio, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, and Rasputina.
My favorite musical genres are indie rock, darkwave, and cello rock. I don't typically like mainsteam country, R&B, or gangsta rap, but there are always exceptions.
Over the past few years, I’ve been to see a little bit of live music. My first show was Extra Blue Kind in the basement of Wired. I saw the Decemberists, along with My Brightest Diamond, in Louisville on their Twilight in the Fearful Forrest Tour. I also saw TV on the Radio in Nashville at the Cannery Lounge. I was in Chicago for Lollapalooza '06, but I was actually there for a comic book convention, and I didn’t go to the music festival. In July 2007, I went to Video Games Live. In October of '07 I saw the Arcade Fire in Louisville. I got to see my favorite band, WHY?, play in Bloomington, IN. I saw WHY? again in Chicago along with Tobacco. I was right up front at a Wolf Parade show at some university, and my picture was in the university's newspaper.
Movies
Nothing beats the Studio Ghibli movies. I know it's cliche, but my favorite live-action movie is probably Donnie Darko. It has the best soundtrack ever, and I love all the actors in it, especially Jake Gyllenhaal and Jenna Malone. I'm a fan of time travel stuff too, so the movie was basically made for me.
My other favorites are Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (not to be confused with Finding Nemo which I still haven't even seen), Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Oldboy. Another cliched, but valid favorite of mine would be Mike Judge's Office Space.
My favorite genres are drama, horror, and suspense. Regardless of genre, I tend to like anything with the little film festival laurels on the box. I'm really into animation too.
My favorite actors are Johnny Depp, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Seth Rogen, and Michael Cera. Don't laugh, but I think I really like Samuel L. Jackson too.
As much as I love comic books and super heroes, I must admit that comic book movie adaptations generally suck. Frank Miller's Sin City was translated perfectly to film though. Dark Knight is easily the best super hero movie.
As would be expected of a geek like me, I love stuff like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings.
Television
I like to watch a lot of tokusatsu -- mostly the henshin hero stuff like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai.
As for comedy, nothing really beats the Office except maybe Curb Your Enthusiasm. Seinfeld is funny too, no matter how many times I've seen every episode.
I don't actually watch that much TV, but when I do, I like to see cartoons. I think Adult Swim is alright, but it's way overrated, and it isn't even as good as it was when it first came on.
I mostly like cartoons from the 1990s. Batman: The Animated Series and its spin-offs that make up the Bruce Timm DC animated universe are examples of what American animated television ought to be. Daria is probably one of the best animated shows ever. As for humor cartoons, I like Rocko's Modern Life, South Park, Beavis & Butthead, Ren & Stimpy, and Invader Zim.
Most cartoons on television today are just poorly dubbed shonen anime. Don't get me wrong, I'm an anime fan, but it just isn't worth watching on TV. I know it sounds elitist, but they really lose a lot in the localization process. I mostly watch anime in downloaded fansubs.
All in the Family and Rosanne are the ultimate sitcoms.
Video Games:
I don't know why MySpace doesn't provide a profile section for video games. They've made their way into the mainstream enough now that they belong with other media like television, books, and film.
My favorite video game company is Nintendo, and it has been since an older cousin taught me to play Super Mario Bros. 3 on NES when I was really little.
My overall (Get it? Overalls, like Mario? Heh heh...) favorite games are Super Mario World (SNES), Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES), Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES), Little Nemo: The Dream Master (NES), Kingdom Hearts (PS2), Mystical Ninja Staring Goemon (N64), Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS), Pokemon Pearl Version (DS), Chrono Trigger (DS), and City of Heroes (PC).
Some of my favorite game franchises are Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Sonic the Hedgehog (even though Sega has lost their touch), FINAL FANTASY, Kingdom Hearts, Harvest Moon, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Mega Man, and Castlevania.
My favorite genres are RPGs, side scrolling platformers, and fighting games. I tend to dislike first person shooters and sports games, however, I did like Goldeneye for Nintendo 64 and I usually enjoy Tony Hawk games, snowboarding games, and Mario sports titles.
My favorite developers are Nintendo, Capcom, and Square Enix.
Books
I'm an English major, so as you could imagine, I do a lot of reading. I'll read just about anything, as I enjoy even just the basic act of reading itself. I often find myself reading the backs of shampoo bottles or potato chip sacks.
My favorite novels are Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, 1984 by George Orwell, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and The Stranger by Albert Camus. I also enjoy the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is the most wonderful children's book I've read.
When it comes to non-fiction, I love reading books on Atheism. I'm also into ethics, and atheism books often overlap into that area. Everyone should check out The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins sometime! It's good stuff!
I'm a huge fan of comic books. I tend to like American comics the best, but I also enjoy manga, as well as British and a few Korean comics. My favorite comic book writers are Alan Moore, Brian K. Vaughan, Grant Morrison, Jhonen Vasquez, Tsugumi Ohba, and Robert Kirkman.
The best graphic novel of all time, and many will agree with me on this one, is Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen. Oh, and Blankets by Craig Thompson! Read that one! The best manga, by far, is Death Note. As far as ongoing books, my favorites are The Walking Dead, Invincible, and The Astounding Wolf-Man. I collect tons of comics though, so I've only scratched the surface here.
Heroes
No one is perfect, and I can't say that I truly idolize anyone. Below is a list of people whose accomplishments I particularly admire.
Jhonen Vasquez, Jackie Chan, Akira Toriyama, Madalyn Murray O'Hair, James Randi, Chuck Palahniuk, Johnny Depp, Dean Trippe, Ross Campbell, Shigeru Miyamoto, Kevin Smith, Louis Theroux, Richard Dawkins, Fred Rogers,
Alan Moore,
Frank Miller, Peter Laird, Michael Moore, Derek Kirk Kim, Derek Hunter, Humberto Ramos, Shotaro Ishinomori, Connor Oberst, Melora Creager, Tunde Adebimpe,
and of course, last but not least, Tommy Oliver (Jason David Frank), the Green Ranger!
About me: My name is Joseph Robert Haynes Gray. I added my wife's surname to the end of my own when we got married which seems to confuse people quite a bit. I simply liked hers better. When I was little, and learned to spell my own last name, it was Sullivan. I wasn't a Haynes until I was in the first grade, and then I had to convince my six-year-old peers that my last name had officially been changed to a major underwear brand. As for my first name, I went by Joey, which I hated, up through high school until I realized that I had the option all along to go by my full first name instead. So anyway, I pretty much go by Joseph Gray.
I have lived in Evansville, Indiana since I was born, but if all goes well I won't live here much longer. My wife Morgan and I are both English/Education majors at the University of Southern Indiana. After graduation, armed with bachelors degrees in English and teaching licenses, Morgan and I are off to Japan to teach English there as part of the JET Programme. As of right now, we live in a weird old house near the zoo and our friends Tyler and Kristina live here with us. Oh, and we've got two pugs, Mr. Geno Pugsworth and Siouxsie Sioux Snaggletooth. There's also this weird kid Brannon who just lets himself in the house and hangs around here all the time.
Although I try really hard not to talk about dorky stuff all the time, I am usually pre-occupied by thoughts of superheroes and other aspects of escapist media. I own video games I've never even played. My collection of comic books could keep a impoverished family warm for many winters if burnt, and my hoard of action figures would put the 40 Year Old Virgin to shame. My house is sorta like a dustier version of Peewee's Playhouse without the puppets.
Aside from MySpace, I spend a lot of time on this goofy website called Gaia Online. Visit my Gaia profile!
Who I'd like to meet: Other geeks, especially comic fans, liberals, and free thinkers. Also, anyone else who is on Gaia Online or City of Heroes.
If you send me a friend request, please send me a message along with it so I know for sure you aren't a bot. I don't just hit add for every request. My friends list is populated with actual friends (with the exception of a few pseudo-celebrities whom I wish were friends.)
When I first got on MySpace, one was able to input what elementary and middle schools he or she had attended, so that they could be found in a search based on those specifications. It's a shame that feature has been removed. Below is a list of schools I attended prior to F.J. Reitz High. I'd love to hear from anyone I knew when I was really little.
Schools I attended prior to Reitz:
Kiddy Campus Preschool
Stockwell Elementary
Cynthia Heights Elementary
Helfrich Park Middle School
Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to think that I'm unfriendly, or an "elitist". I think (and hope) that if you get to know me, you'll see that my reputation is inaccurate. I'm quite shy and reserved in certain social situations (social anxiety perhaps), and some people may interpret that as me being snooty or standoffish, which really isn't the case. Please feel free to strike up a conversation with me.
Just thought I'd let you know, in case you haven't checked your devart 5 times already (like i know i have) that i doodled a little pic of Lunar Lad and even put a little coloring into it :D It's not much, but i hope to do more now that I actually have my tablet pen, soooo, hope you like it!
Yas min. They are indeed freakin' ace, and apparently once at a Why? gig the guy from Fog got on stage and they started playing HB songs. Which I can only imagine would have been an AWESOME sight.
I looked up "Whatever You Like" after we discussed it, and I realized that T.I. didn't sound at all how I remembered. I did a little Wikipedia-ing, and learned that Lil Wayne did something of a cover for a mixtape, and that was the version I heard a snippet of and was why I thought the song was by Lil' Wayne:
Anyway, after listening to T.I.'s version, I think it's an alright song, overall. The chorus is pretty good, but I don't much care for the verses, or really find them all that creative either.
Thanks Joey! You've always supported anything musically related to me. Yeah, I'm staying with my friend Jeremiah, who happens to live almost on St. Joe. Which means we need to get together and have a blanket party. I also might have a job at Walgreens. That's all.
we had to shape him a little but yea fits really well but how do you like the music!!! jk i live 2 blocks from the Taco bell on St. Joe he's staying here for a while so if you wanna come chill let us know.
