13Six was formed in Sept of 2005. Since then, the band has gone through some changes in the way of band members and it was for the good of the band, as the band is now made up entirely of US Military Veterans. Marty and Craig are Vietnam era vets; Jay is retired Air Force and a veteran of Desert Storm/Iraqi Freedom, while Jack served 6 yrs as a Navy Seal (we really can’t talk about what he did). Marty and Craig have been performing as professionals for over 35 years, Jay has 13 years on the drums and Jack has 16 years experience as a lead vocalist and front man. Together, 13Six is a force to be reckoned with. The boys also have a new manager, Mr. William Rowen, we are looking forward to the new partnership with Mr. Rowen.
13Six released its first cd in November of 2006 with thirteen songs and a total of 59 minutes of great music. There isn’t just one song that stands out; it’s all the songs that bring to the forefront the troubles of our times. This cd is music for veterans by veterans. It’s a healing compilation for all the combat vets that have stood, and are still holding the line to protect this great country we call home. This band is proud to have been able to say what needs to be said at this point in time. We would also like to thank the men and women who have served in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and are still serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other conflicts, some known, and some not-so-known. And to all the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines and that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our flag and what it represents, rest easy, the line is held, well done...this cd is for you.
13Six tells the truth about the lie, the music and lyrics cut through the darkness like a saber so the light can shine on hope. We do so hope you enjoy what 13six as brought to and for you.
The name of the band comes from the chief musician, a Psalm of David, Psalm 13:6
"I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me."
While it is rumored that the name comes from Marty’s truck driving days…it’s what was displayed in his rear view mirror all those long miles..."Max Height, 13ft 6in," it cannot be substantiated.
Member Bios
- Marty Robinson:
Marty hails from Hartford Conn and started playing guitar in 1965 at 12 years old. Taught by his mother, older brother, uncle (Fathers Side) and his cousin Eddie Robinson, Marty came from a musical family. Marty first song was written in 1966 and it was off to the races, as Marty’s first album had a song get some radio play in 1978 (My Lady) and in 1997 with his band Minus Franc, (Life’s A Breeze) which broke in Spain. Marty has over thirty years experience and has played music ranging from: rock & roll, blues, country western and a form of jazz fusion. Marty’s lyrics sometimes to ruff the point are heart felt and we’re written to tell the truth about the lie. Marty is a proud to have served his country and as a member of the Blackfeet Indian Tribe, is a true American.
- Jack Bivens:
Jack is the bands newest member and was born in Matador Texas. He and has been singing for seven years forming his first band “Code 3", which was comprised of all firefighters. His biggest claim to fame came when one of his original numbers; "Where the Pieces Fall" was picked by director Francis Ford Coppola to air on his Emmy award nominated series “First Wave” on the sci-fi channel. After Code 3, Jack was asked to front a popular local band the, “Groove Lords“, which was later renamed “Spartacus Jones“. He continued to play with them until 2002, until moving to San Antonio to attend flight school. Jack brings a considerable amount of stage time and a little different vocal groove to 13six. He is honored that 13six is allowing him to share his talent with such a talented group of guys. Jack say’s "Marty’s lyrics come from his heart and are based from a warrior’s emotional and physical loss: it re-charges my sole to contribute to this effort!"
- Jay Hilliard:
As the bands new drummer, Jay comes from Salina KS and has been playing drums for more than thirteen years. Jay retired in Oct 2004 after 22 years in the Air Force. He brings a level of experience that only comes from playing all over the world, from Japan to Cypress, in cover bands (Big Zoot, Smokin ‘ERB), to an original venture (Better Abraham) and a country act (Copperhead). Jay likes to think of himself as someone who plays from the heart, and we are proud to have his experience and personality as someone to keep the train from running off the tracks. He is a true pro.
- Craig Whitaker:
Craig is from Lewiston Maine, and has been playing bass guitar and performing for more then thirty five years. Craig also served in the Air Force and is a Vietnam era Vet. Craig studied music at U of M and is heavily influenced by jazz, which, consequently, puts a whole new twist on the bit heavier, darker rock & roll of 13six. His mastery of his instrument has been termed "awe inspiring" by his fellow band mates and the public at large. Craig’s heart and soul lives in music and he is a true virtuoso.
