  • THE FLYING MAN on Orange Prize Longlist 2012!

    Dear All....

Hugely exciting news yesterday – my fifth novel, THE FLYING MAN has been longlisted for the ORANGE PRIZE 2012!....

Just so stunned and delighted – especially to be longlisted among such amazing company, and such wonderful books. I've already read a few on the longlist, and look forward to the others as a treat when I've finished working on my latest draft, which is inching along at the moment.....

This is my third listing with the Orange Prize in the last five years, and I owe so much to the Orange Prize and their judging panels for bringing my books to a wider audience. Without it, it's fair to say that I would have struggled to support myself and my family as a writer...it's frankly quite hard enough, with four children aged six and under! As it is, I always remember just how incredibly fortunate I am, do be able to do what I love for a living.....

For those in the South East, I'll be speaking about writing and THE FLYING MAN at these events:....

14th March, 2.30pm Essex Book Festival, Epping Library....

    26th March, 2.30pm Aylesham Library....

23 April, 7pm Tonbridge Library, World Book Night....

Finally, there have been some lovely UK reviews for THE FLYING MAN too, here they all are:....

"Compelling. Brittle, flawed and damaged as they are, Farooki's characters always seem real. Told in prose that is both commanding and fluid, this is a potent, seriously impressive novel." Daily Mail....

"Roopa Farooki's intricate tale is a memorable read. Five Stars." Star Magazine....
'This is an original, fresh book, beautifully written, perceptive and often funny. Farooki writes with a flowing, light touch which makes it an easy read but which doesn't disguise the intelligence that drives it.' Red Magazine Online....

"3 Reasons to Read The Flying Man: 1, For a lesson in reinvention, 2, For an unconventional love story, 3, To enjoy a glittering world tour. Farooki has a knack for vividly recreating the atmosphere of different cities and social worlds in just a few lines, leaving you with the illusion that you've actually been there yourself." Psychologies Magazine, Lead Review....

"Farooki has excelled in writing stories that span continents and mix cultures. (Maqil's) mentality captures that of the consummate immigrant outsider, except that his is a Sisyphean struggle. He is forever doomed to adapt, chameleon-like, ... unable to give himself a fixed identity or, ultimately, to call a place his home." The Independent....

"A compulsively readable novel of love and duplicity." We Love This Book (Waterstones Magazine)....

"Engaging and descriptive...filled with humour and colour...a really brilliant read." Essentials Magazine....

"The eagerly-awaited fifth novel from Orange prize long-listed author fully demonstrates her ability to conjure up memorable, affecting characters. The compelling story is one that makes a lasting impression as Farooki excels in her depiction of tensely fraught relationships. " The Irish Examiner

    ....

"A seductive adventure of a man who refuses to be tied down. Farooki probes carefully and with empathy the thinning line between freedom and loneliness, how "anywhere" can eventually turn into just nowhere. The Flying Man triumphs in the touching symbol it suggests for all our journeys." The Guardian....

"Some of the author's previous books have been long-listed for literary prizes; this beautifully crafted novel could be the one that makes her a winner." Choice Magazine

"The story of a rogue and a charlatan, and a disreputable and entertaining life. But the character is also thoroughly engaging, and written with a lot of compassion. He is both tricky and likeable. A charming, maddening figure, with shades of Peter Carey's Illywhacker." Kate Evans, ABC Radio (Australia)....

"A beautifully crafted tale about a clever but criminally minded man who chances and gambles his way around the globe." Oxford Today

"(An) engrossing tale.. Farooki takes us on a journey from birth to death, showing us the love, pain, selfishness and weakness of the human soul...Farooki has used the world as her canvas and painted an attractive fable that exudes glamour and mystery. Absorbing, funny and ultimately sad, The Flying Man is a cracking read." Booktrust....

  • Publicity Events for THE FLYING MAN

    Hello All

Feeling a bit guilty that I don't blog more often, but the truth is that writers (or at least, this particular writer) have deeply uninteresting lives. My usual day is something like this: school run, toddler playgroup, lunch, laundry, playdates, school run, board games and blocks, dinner, kids' storytime and bedtime, and then it's just several hours of sitting alone in a room and working. (Or as my boys describe it, making stuff up and writing it down.) Add in a light sprinkling of frothy coffee and teaching my creative writing course, and that's pretty much it.

Finally, however, I have something interesting to report, as HALF LIFE (my fourth novel) was nominated for the Muslim Writers' Award, which was rather exciting. Didn't win, but still a lovely night was had by all. An article on the night by the Asian Writer is below:
    http://theasianwriter.co.uk/2011/11/muslim-writers-awards-2/

Even more exciting, my new novel, THE FLYING MAN, is coming out in the UK next month! My publisher has done a couple of videos of me chatting about my inspiration for the novel, and the research process, so here are the links:
