You Are MC Pee Pants
The man walks slowly over the bridge, slumped with poor posture and peering downward through the spaces in the bridge’s wooden slats, into the abyss of the gulch below.
It had been some time since he had last seen an animal pass his sights. These mountains, for a while, had been habituated with slinking, rail-thin forms of former housecats and small things that buzzed or chirped. Now they were gone too. He thinks he may have seen a cat about four inches ago or so.
He measures time by beard growth. The beard is nearly to his waist now. There is water in a lake nearby that he measured his reflection in when he was still trimming it and considering it according to inches. Lately he doesn’t go near it. Instead, he knows the beard’s length not because he looks at it, but simply instinctively, because he tugs on it much of the time, and always when he thinks, such as now. Someday, he thinks, he might have to drink from the lake when his storage runs out. Maybe he’ll collect rainwater instead.
The abyss he crosses sometimes looks shallow. Then he can see his nearly transparent shadow and the bridge’s shadow at an indeterminate distance beneath. The bridge shadow is heavier, and lends his outline structure. The shade of the bridge seems close, and his, far. When the sun is overhead he can’t see it at all, but he tries not to come out at those times. It’s evening now, and the shadows are near, but unnaturally inarticulate.
As he reaches the far side of the bridge, he steps onto higher ground and peers over a stony ridge. The source of the smoke that set him in this direction is clear: some 10,000 acres of forestry are in a blaze a few thousand yards away. The sight is awkward. Formerly he’d have called it spectacular, terrifying, dreadful, but now it simply lacks significance. Nevertheless, it transfixes him.
In the lower peripheral of his vision something is moving through the thick grassland. It moves towards him bestially, like a stalking panther. Impossible, he thinks wanderingly, the thought not even directed to himself.
Hulking, on all fours, there is a stranger advancing through the thicket. His clothing hangs off him in charred ribbons. No, not clothing. Flesh.
The stranger stumbles closer, rasping and wheezing like a tracheotomy patient. His shoulders and legs are gruesomely bared of skin, and his face is blackened with soot and burns. Still the distant flames beckon focus to the background.
When he sees the man collapse soundlessly, he thinks somewhere deep within himself: how embarrassing. The day’s lingering awkwardness compounds evermore.
The fires advance, and suddenly it becomes obvious that the grassland is burning as well as the forest. He follows the dance of flames towards his crag of rock by the bridge, and the collapsed stranger becomes more defined as he does. He should pull him out; he should leave him be. He doesn’t even have time to think about how he might try to nurse the stranger back to health, or how his store of food and water would suffer the consequences. The fire whispers in his mind and darts closer like a million illuminated tongues. Then the stranger is engulfed without a word, a brighter bush of flame that conforms unsteadily, then gutters after the grasses and finally smolders into nothing.
His eyes stinging from the smoke, he turns away and rubs them momentarily, then starts back towards the bridge.
The smoke has thickened above and the sky is dark. It slowly begins to rain and he retreats from it like the stranger had from the flames. His shadow in the gulch is one moment diminished and now the next, gone.
That night his cabin floods with black water and he wonders if any of the stranger’s convergence has made it back to his cabin as an element. He considers for a moment the idea of being haunted by an elemental. The water is thick like sludge. His cabin reeks like the inside of a septic tank and he thinks to himself that humanity has shit the hot tub. Then he thinks again about the awkwardness of the day.
Happy 26th Birthday, Timoteo, Mine is next month. I'll be 25. Your birthday cake with the cherry tomato looked awesome! Anyway, have a very ba ba ri birthday! ~Julie
