Founded in Manchester, 14 Gifted Children temporarily inhabit spaces that have a strong sense of identity. A series of exhibitions exploring the different interpretations of the context, provide a unique platform for an engaging dialogue between artists work and the space in which it is shown. At last, the final show at Loxford Tower which marks the impending demolition of the tower, and the demise of 14 Gifted Children.

A fable is told of a Baghdad merchant who sent his servant to the market to pick up some goods for him. While the servant was making the purchases in the market place he found himself face to face with Death! In great fear he returned to his master and told him that Death had given him a menacing look and that he must have a horse so he could escape to Samara, a city some distance away. The master quickly gave his servant a horse, then went to the market place to find Death. When he found him he asked, "Why did you give my servant a menacing look?" Death replied, "I wasn't looking at him menacingly, I was merely surprised to see him here in Baghdad; for, you see, I have an appointment with him tonight in Samara."

The Green Room presents the first solo show by Suzanne Smith, member of the artist-led group 14 Gifted Children.

Smith is interested in moments of intensity, the beauty of the definition of a feeling and the relief of being able to point at it; using humour as a coping mechanism and egging herself on with the pure joy of inappropriate action.

Smith works in a variety of disciplines, here showing two films and wall-based work, dealing with the mundane internalised melodrama of staying in the house and occasionally considering leaving it.

Smith is lives and works in Manchester.

Past Exhibitions


Should we distinguish between This and That Exhibition by the 14 Gifted Children held on the 10 th floor of Loxford Tower. The tower previously existed as halls of residence and more recently an office space providing a unique context and dialogue with the art work, the art exhibtion dealt with this context of the buildings history.

Panoramic This was the second art exhibition by the 14 Gifted Children held in Loxford Tower, dealt with more physical ideas of a symbiotic relationship between structures and their surroundings.

The Essence of Something Interesting This art exhibtion was held in the Trianhle Centre in the middle of Manchester. Exhibition of genre spanning art, exploring delusions of grandeur and false expectations beyond your wildest dreams.
