Bio:

Originally from Poland, Szymon Brzoska started playing the piano from his early childhood. He graduated from the Music Academy in Poznan, Poland as well as the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, Belgium.

Szymon’s particular interest in the synergy between music, contemporary dance, theatre and cinema led him to participate in numerous collaborative projects across various art forms.

In 2008 he composed the score for Sutra, a collaboration with choreographer Sidi Larbi Charkaoui, sculptor Anthony Gormley and monks from the Shaolin temple in China.

Sutra’s sucess led Brzoska and Cherkaoui to join forces on two more projects: Orbo Novo performed by the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, which premiered in Jacob’s Pillow dance festival in 2009 and Dunas, a duet between Cherkaoui and celebrated flamenco danseuse Maria Pagès.

Szymon then turned towards more intimate projects which resulted in I will by Małgorzata Dzierżon, a Rambert Dance Company member, (S)NOW by Dutch choreographer Joost Vrouenraets and Desert with the Polish Dance Theatre. Szymon's orchestral score for Labyrinth, a ballet commissioned by Het Nationale Ballet, which premiered in Amsterdam in June 2011, was yet another opportunity to revisit his artistic relationship with Cherkaoui.

Contemporary dance performances with his music have been presented in the most prestigious venues around the world like Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Sydney Opera House, Lincoln Centre in New York, Esplanade in Singapore as well as at the Festival D’Avignon.

Szymon’s contemporary compositions were performed during the music @ venture festival in Antwerp, Festival of Polish Piano Music and Sounds New Contemporary Music Festival in Canterbury (by, among others, pianist Barbara Drążkowska, cellist Bartosz Koziak, I solisti del vento, Holland Symfonia, violinist Olga Wojciechowska, koto and taiko performer Tsubasa Hori, singer Patrizia Bovi).

He also wrote the soundtrack for the French film Le bruit des gens autour directed by Diastème.

REVIEWS

Brzóska's music gives each episode extra emotional colour and gathers the work to its powerful conclusion.

Judith Mackrell, The Guardian, 30th May 2008

Szymon Brzóska's score for percussion and strings wisely doesn’t try to compete with the monks’ inner rhythms; rather it seeks to surround them with soothing, even meditative sounds.

Debra Craine, The Times, 30th May 2008

The melancholic music of Polish composer Szymon Brzoska, shakes Sutra to its core.

Rosita Boisseau, Le Monde, July 2008

… the perfect alchemy would not have had this intensity without its remarkable musical environment. Thus the choreographer was able to create a bridge between two worlds with the help of the young Polish composer, Szymon Brzóska.

Violetta Asier, Dauphiné Libéré, 11th July 2008

From far behind Szymon Brzóska's music sounds melodious, sweet and rhythmically accentuated, at times reserved and almost cool. It comes as no surprise that he has also composed film music – a good soundtrack adapts itself to the plot so that the viewer senses rather than hears it. In some ways Brzóska is the perfect composer for modern dance.

Mike Dixon, Ballettanz, July 2008
