In the past I've been deeply affected by Pasolini's Salo -- it's liberating in the same way The Wizard of Oz is liberating -- and it deals with the same theme: Fascism in any form will rape every pore on your body when you are at your most vulnerable, innocent and beautiful. You know they killed him, Pasolini, because of that movie. Then they stole the negative -- the film was reassembled from outtakes by his assistants. The movie is full of ugly things presented beautifully. If you rent it have a big pitcher of lemonade, a bowl of tootsie rolls and some chocolate mousse handy, just to put you in the mood. Other Pasolini films in the order I like them: The Decameron, Arabian Nights, Canterbury Tales. He was a poet, he was an aristocrat, he was openly gay. He was especially generous with his money regarding, ahem, working class youth.

MGM musicals suckered me all my childhood, as did Warner Brothers film noir, Paramount glam and Fox spectacle. All the big european directors they teach you about in film school delighted and taught me a different way to see as a kid (I'd like my own eyes back now, please.) The first Fellini I saw was La Strada. Sniff. Then Satyricon -- I lived in that movie for a while. Juliet of the Spirits was next, Spirits of the Dead (Never Bet the Devil Your Head -- Terrence Stamp playing a 60s pop star speeding around Rome all night in a brand new Mazaratti, on acid, pursued by a demonic little girl whose red red lips match her red red nails), Nights of Cabiria -- oh yeah, his first, White Sheik, is hilarious.

John Waters, of course, is a national treasure, with a flawless prophetic vision and an unremitting sweetness in his affectionate embrace of the abhorent. I saw him introduce Marguerite Duras' "The Truck." Half the audience was in hysterics, the other had pipes up their butts. And at 60 he's totally adorable and completely f'able. In early films his non-actors tell deeper truth than his pros in the later bigger budgeted stuff. He's the only person who could make Tracey Ullmann and Patty Hearst funny, and got Kathleen Turner to do her best work ever! Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Polyester, Crybaby, Serial Mom, Pecker, A Dirty Shame. ......................................................................................................................

Mike Leigh took me time traveling with Topsy-Turvy, about the first production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado. Rehearsed his actors for six months so this movie looks like a documentary shot in the 19th century. (Who knew the original Koko was shooting himself up with morphine between acts?)

Guru Dutt. Master Indian film director of the 50s and 60s. Never saw a director rip his heart off his sleeve and stick it to celluloid the way Guru Dutt did. Way ahead of his time. Humanistic, heartbreaking, hilarious, beautifully observed. Sometimes he directs, sometimes produces, sometimes acts. Used the same core company of actors over and over. 100mm lenses catching every speck, ambient lighting so actors come and go through shadows. Innovatively staged musical numbers -- you might say he invented the music video. Sahib Bibi aur Gulam (Master, Wife and Servant), Pyaasa (Thirst), Kaagaz ke Phool (Paper Flowers), Mr. & Mrs. 55. While preparing his next project he left earth accidentally at age 39 via too many sleeping pills washed down with scotch (he had such trouble sleeping).

Aamir Khan, actor/producer. Sometimes his Bollywood films have been wacky remakes of American films, e.g., Akele Hum Akele Tum is Kramer vs. Kramer. The films he produced and starred in: Lagaan and Mangal Pandey, are masterpieces. He should always be the producer -- his taste and judgment are exquisite. (Adamo should see these movies if he hasn't already.)

Rainer Werner Fassbinder. If you can take his unrelenting truth-telling without sugar-coating. An early work I love: Fox and His Friends. A gay carnival worker loses his boyfriend and wins the lottery. His new friends, a clique of bougie queens, proceed to bleed him of his newfound riches. Fassbinder plays Fox, still young and in-shape. Gives a wickedly funny performance in a wickedly funny movie. Fassbinder commited suicide with his lover later when he was an obese heroin addict. Love love love Fassbinder.

Meanwhile, back to -- F'ING ADAMO because he's so much fun to watch and he, ADAMO RUGGIERO, IS THE FUTURE. Looks divinely exhausted during his BIG DRAMA A-Plot episode scenes -- no doubt from obsessing all night to get it right. He gets beautifully rough around the edges digging so deep for the truth, and he's doing it FOR US. ........................................................................... I love how Adamo gets all heavy lidded and hoarse in those major emotional moments. Degrassi Director of Photography Gavin Smith knows how to work with Adamo and vice-versa. ..................................................................................... Check out how the eyes drop and voice slows when Marco breaks up with Dylan in Season 4, and when he screams at his dad after coming out to him in Season 5. .................................................................................... May Adamo stay safe. May the universe protect him from evil, from stupid people, from boredom, from burnout, from despair. May his creative fire burn long and brightly. Please.
