At the time of the annual fair in July 1549, the grievances of the poor came to a head, especially regarding the the enclosure of the common land by the gentry. Kett agreed to lead a protest march against such injustices. Eventually, 15,000 joined his camp ..hold Heath. A petition was sent to the King requesting reforms and social justice. The government ordered the camp to disperse. Kett refused, believing no crime had been committed. When the city of Norwich closed its gates to the camp, the rebels broke in at Bishop’s Bridge and took control of the city. Eventually, a large royal army arrived which defeated the rebels at the Battle of Dussindale on 27 August, killing 3,000 of Kett’s followers. Kett was hanged as a traitor from Norwich Castle walls on 7 December. Kett’s Rebellion drew attention to the plight of the poor and it’s leader gave them a voice at a time when they had none. Pageants, Mystery plays and music were very much part of Kett’s world. This CD is a poignant and moving tribute to a great man and a remarkable event in Norfolk’s history.
