   Redbecca's Blurbs
About me:
I'm enthusiastic about almost everything I do. I'm never mean spirited, and genrally easygoing, and laid back. I like good conversation, especially over a beer. I love my work, my nieces and nephews, and my awesome friends, who are really my family. I have a weakness for rescuing animals, and I'm a total nerd about theatre (building, not acting). Sometimes, I like to build smaller things with needles and thread. You can check me out at www.redbecca.etsy.com . I'm also really passionate about politics and activism, and tend towards the radical left persuasion. I'm an anti-imperialist, and a socialist. As they say, power concedes nothing without a demand. I can sometimes be silly, and I love to laugh. I also have a (not so) mild obsession with pirates. ***A NOTE TO THOSE OF YOU SENDING ME HATE MAIL AND POSTING RACIST COMMENTS ON MY BLOG*** I will neither respond to nor interact with racists or bogots. If you're interested in a real debate, let me know. I don't post doctored pictures of women who have died as a result of not having access to abortion on your message board, please don't post pictures of stillborn fetuses on mine. If you do post racist comments or personal attacks on my blog or message board, I will simply block you.
Who I'd like to meet:
People who are open minded, indepedant thinkers. We live in a crazy world these days, so a good sense of humor is almost as important to life as the air we breath. (Also people who wear eye patches, drink grog and rum, might have parrots or large tri-cornered hats, and fly the jolly roger.)

Dream Act

What Are Your Top 10 Ideas for Change in America?

The Ideas for Change in America competition was created in response to Barack Obama's call for increased citizen involvement in government. The final round of voting began on January 5.

The top 10 rated ideas from the final round will be presented to the Obama administration on January 16th at an event at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. At that event they will also announce the launch of a national advocacy campaign behind each of the top 10 ideas in collaboration with nonprofit partners to turn each idea into an actual policy.

WELL GUESS WHAT????????? THE DREAM ACT IS IN 18th PLACE!!!

It only takes a minute of your precious time to sign up and vote in favor of THE DREAM ACT. Just for a moment think about all those undocumented students that depend on THE DREAM ACT to come out of the shadows. I'm sure they will be forever grateful.

THE VOTING ENDS AT 5pm ET on Thursday, January 15th! WE ONLY HAVE 8 MORE DAYS LEFT!
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND START VOTING!!!

To some power is guns
To some power is knifes
To some power is the ability to read, and write.
To some power is control
To some power is a fist
To some like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. power was words.
To some power is like a trapped animal trying to get out of a cage.
To some power is love
To some power is art
To some power is money
To me power is knowledge
So what is power to you?

Touch my heart and feel my pain
Look me in the eyes taste my tears
You don't understand how much I've cried
If I died tomorrow would you shed tears
Would you mourn for me
As I write down this words
I leave a part of me on this page
Written in the form of poetry
Now I'm shedding tears hoping
That you remember this Poet
If I die tomorrow

Port Huron Project 2: The Problem Is Civil Obedience

A public reenactment of a speech originally given by author and activist Howard Zinn at a peace rally in May 1971. In this stirring speech, Zinn argued for the necessity of civil disobedience to protest the war in Vietnam and called on Congress to impeach the president and vice president of the United States for the “high crime” of waging war on the people of Southeast Asia.

When: Saturday, July 14, 5 PM (rain date July 15)

Where: Northwest corner of the Boston Common, near the intersection of Charles and Beacon streets. Note: this is the exact site of Zinn’s original speech!

This is the second event in the Port Huron Project, a series of remakes of protest speeches from New Left movements of 1960s and '70s. The project is named after the Port Huron Statement, the visionary manifesto of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), a radical student group formed in 1962. The first event in the series, Port Huron Project 1: Until the Last Gun Is Silent, took place on Sept. 16, 2006, and was based on a speech given by Coretta Scott King at a peace march in Central Park in 1968. The third event will be a reenactment of a speech originally given by SDS President Paul Potter at the March on Washington in April 1965.

APPEAL TO THE UNITED NATIONS FOR A MORATORIUM ON EXECUTIONS

To the UN Secretary-General,

We, the undersigned, believe that the human race must evolve, and the abolition of the death penalty is not only an individual need that strengthens the inviolability of the person, but also a vital, universal need. It is the ultimate goal of the 20th century; the meeting point of different civilizations.

"Hands off Cain" paraphrases the words of the Bible, and for us this ancient commandment means that the State cannot dispose of the lives of its citizens. While many people are in favor of retaining or reinstating the death penalty, their profound sense of justice is misplaced by crime that endangers us all.

The abolition of the death penalty is a belief shared by the International Community. On April 20, 2005, for the ninth year running, the UN Commission on Human Rights established that "the abolition of the death penalty contributes to the enhancement of human dignity and to the progressive development of human rights", asking retentionist States "to establish a moratorium on executions, with a view to completely abolishing the death penalty".

The Courts set up by the Security Council to pronounce judgement on genocide, ethnic cleansing, mass extermination, and other serious crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, and the Statute of the Permanent International Court for crimes against humanity, all categorically exclude capital punishment, whereas a number of States actually inflict the death penalty for far less serious crimes.

We, the undersigned, ask the United Nation General Assembly to lead the International Community away from this intolerable anachronism, by establishing a universal moratorium on executions with a view to total abolition.

After the abolition of slavery and the banning of torture, the right not to be killed following a legal sentence could be another common denominator, a new inalienable

Just wanted to say hi. I've had a stomach bug on and off for almost 3 weeks now, so I was thinking of coming home the weekend after next, but now I have to make up clinical hours that weekend, since I skipped clinical yesterday and today. Hope all is well, and that the crazy pugs aren't driving you crazy. I can wait to bring kola home, and then the dogs can all wear each other out and maybe kola will her full on bonsai-jumping on me every time i'm trying to sleep- attack. Hope all is well!
