Later that night Pete and I set off by car down the M5 motorway to Bohemia in Torquay, formerly known as Claire’s. I’ve known many a club and bar owner who’ve renamed and re-launched their venue, but essentially kept everything the same. If a dj’ing career covering two decades has taught me anything, it’s that venues need to constantly reinvest and occasionally reinvent. There’s too much nightlife choice for complacency to settle in. Whereas Claire’s used to be an old school nightclub of the basic dancehall variety, Bohemia wouldn’t look out of place in any major European capital, despite being way out west in Devon. It was way cool.
Major roadworks on the M5 motorway meant that I rolled into Bohemia and headed straight for the decks. The norm is to arrive early, sit down, chat and be sociable. I couldn’t help commenting to owner Mike McGowan on just how expensive and impressive the redevelopment looked, and the atmosphere was equally good.
