The twelve stockings of Christmas past:

I grew up in a large family. Two parents, ten kids - twelve Christmas stockings (I was number seven of the ten). We hung the stockings every Christmas Eve along the mantel of the fireplace in the childrens playroom. Drinking eggnog, listening to Christmas music and sometimes - the Chipmonks. The stockings were always hung in order of our ages; starting with my father's stocking on the left and ending with the youngest child's on the right. The row of stockings grew longer over time, as the family grew to twelve.

There were two Christmas trees every year; an artificial one and a real one. The artificial one was a large silvery tree that slowly spun in the front livingroom window. It had spot lights that would change colors as the tree went round and round. The tree had it's own music that could be turned on and off, and the colors seemed to change in time with the music (pretty high tech for the time). The real tree was always in the playroom, and yes - that's the one that got the tinsel.

On Chrismas morning my father would be in the playroom setting up the movie camera to film the expressions as we entered the room. The kids would line up in the hallway leading to the playroom doors. The youngest in front, the oldest in back (with the oldest waiting longer and longer as the family grew).

We'd hear the music start, then the doors would open to twinkling lights, schwinn bicycles and what looked like a truck load of presents, with twelve names mixed in - so it was fun digging for the ones that said "Mark".

PS The movies:
We'd watch the old movies (and laugh at each other) every Thanksgiving night, on a projection screen with an 8mm reel to reel projector. Then we'd watch cartoons until we fell asleep and somehow woke up in our beds.
