    Hi Mr. Kristof. i am writing not for myself. My teacher Ms. Sarah Small is someone i think would be perfect to take along for your trip. She read to us your article announcing the contest and has been teaching us African literature by such authors as Chinua Achebe. She would be a perfect candidate because she, like many, is extremley bothered with the poverty and disease problems children are suffering with in Africa and is truley determined to help make the world a better place. Nick will choose one college or graduate student in an American university and one teacher in an American middle or high school to accompany him on a 10-day reporting trip and experience the horrors of – and solutions to – global poverty first-hand. Whether you apply or not, continue to check out this profile for videos, blogs, and articles from Nick, last year’s winner Casey Parks, and, eventually, this year’s student and teacher winners. Follow their progress across the African continent, hear their thoughts on interviewing world leaders, join them as they visit hospitals and orphanages, and witness the displacement from the Darfur genocide through their eyes.
The only way to truly understand the challenge of global poverty is to see it, smell it, feel it. So I'm looking for two people -- a university student and a school teacher -- to join me on a reporting trip to Africa. You’ll encounter malnutrition, AIDS, malaria and wretched schools but you’ll also see ways to combat those problems. We'll interview leaders, but we'll spend most of our time in the villages and slums, and the winners will blog and record videos about what we see.

Expect to see plenty of heartbreak, but also heroic people who are making real progress in overcoming poverty. I'm hoping the experiences will help transform you -- not turn you into an aid worker, but leave an unforgettable imprint on you that will affect your priorities for the rest of your life. And I'm hoping that your blogging in turn will help leave an imprint on countless others who travel vicariously through you.
