Jim's Interests
|
| General | Anything that'll engage me really. 1) Sports would be football, pool, snooker, basketball and darts (as well as the odd game of croquet). 2) Hobbies would be guitar, but I'm always experimenting with new instruments, and songwriting, though they'll hopefully be my career eventually. I also write poetry (sometimes) but they mainly get converted into songs. I write short stories whenever I can get round to it. I also do pencil/pen drawings. 3) Friends, for talking to. 4) Women. I like women because I can talk to them about things that I wouldn't talk to my mates about, and because they're very different and hard to understand... I like a challenge :-) . I can also fall in love with women, which is nice while it lasts, but less nice when it invariably ends (usually against my wishes, but you can't force someone to love you unfortunately. Bugger!). 5) I like my work, so history would be an interest I suppose. Yay essays (what a geek)! | | Music | Well, apart from what I write my musical tastes are somewhat eclectic. Loudon Wainwright III, Johnny Cash, Peter Gabiel, Richard Thomson, The Indigo Girls, Joni Mitchell, Martha Wainwright, U2, REM, The Police, Jefferson Airplane, Mozart, Cassette Boy, Cypress Hill, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Matt Ward, Paul Simon, The Pogues, The Dublinners, James Taylor, Pink Floyd, Verve, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Cannonball Aderley, Pantera, Sepultura (old school), Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, Rage Against The Machine, One Minute's Silence, Testament, Cathedral, DJ Yoda, DJ Hype, Andy C, MC PittMan, Asian Dub Foundation, Melt Banana, Executive Distraction Tasks, Narcosis, Crowbar Smile, Three Ways West, Rob Heath, Owen Davies, Hollie Martorella. | | Movies | Erm... Lord of the Rings (all three), The Usual Suspects, Dune, Twin Peaks, Star Wars (three to six), Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, Leon. Not a massive movie buff really. More will come to mind no doubt. | | Television | The News, Peter Kay (phoenix nights, stand up, that Peter Kay thing), Red Dwarf, Back Adder, Ricky Gervais (stand up only), Eddie Izzard, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers, UK TV History. Not a big fan of TV really, so stuff that informs me and stuff that makes me laugh. | | Books | JRR Tolkein - Lord of the Rings, Albert Camus - The Plague, Dante - Inferno (the Devine Comedy), Bridge and Bullen - Great Power Diplomacy and the European States System, Solzyzin (?) - A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovic, John Steinbeck - Of Mice and Men, Lary May - Movie Star Politics, My Dissertation (well I had to read it, didn't I?!!!!), Michael Moore - Stupid White Men, Lovejoy - Transformations in Slavery, Frank Herbert - Dune (the series), JK Rowling - Harry Potter (the series), Winchester - Krakatoa, Douglas Adams - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, John Grant - Albion, Shakespere - The Complete Works of... (only a few plays and sonets), Terry Pratchet - The DiscWorld Series, Roger Collins - Early Medieval Europe, Bennet - A History of Burnley, Martin Kitchen - Fascism, Dougas Adams - The Meaning of Liff, Riesman - Abundance for What?, Mills - White Collar Worker. | | Heroes | Probably Tolkein for books, my Dad for life view (i.e. chilled out), Eddie Izzard for TV, Richard Thopson for music (closely followed by our drummer Elliot Smith... for his drumming), Steve Davis for snooker, Andy Fordham for darts. And Steve Clucas (my mate) for drinking beer!! (closely followed by me). |

Jim's Blurbs |
About me:
Hi, I'm Jim (real name Matthew - Jim is my middle name and is what my mates call me). I'm 23. I'm from Burnley in the UK, which is near Manchester. I support Burnley Football Club. Check them out.
In my spare time I like to play football. I also like to play pool and snooker as well as darts. On top of this, I like to drink lots and lots of beer. This comes with the territory of being a scummy student. Unfortunately, I graduated last June so now there's no excuse! I was a student at the University of Durham (the third most prestigous in the UK - he said with pride and a touch smug self satisfaction). I did history and got a 2.2.
I am a musician, a guitarist in a tech grind band called Reth. I also play and sing complex folk and jazz music. My band has recently been signed and we're putting out an internet order only album on CD and vinyl, as well as MP3 format. For our demos, check out Walton of Reth's myspace (www.myspace.com/reth). It's not for the faint-hearted. My solo stuff is in sharp contrast to this. While not being easy listening per se, it's nice, thought provoking and hopefully catchy enough to attract a wide audience, while complex and odd enough to attract a few afficionados of interesting alternaive music. I hope to have a CD ready by winter of this year. The album will contain about 14-18 of my own songs (14 tracks are now recorded) as well as a live video. Various differing connotations of this will be sent to a number of contacts I've got/will have in the industry. There are some MP3s on www.myspace.com/mattbentley1. Either way, both this and my band are interesting and different. Check them both out.
This will hopefully all take place within a year and you might even be buying my stuff in the shops by then! However, realistically dreams rarely come true. If this doesn't work out, I'll go back into education to do my MA and PhD. I'll then do a PGCE and hopefully go into university lecturing. If I really can't hack the 100,000 word book I have to write for my PhD, I might just do a PGCE and go into teaching A-Level students.
Well, those are a few things about me. As to what I look like. Imagine the profile pic, but less cartoony, on a slim guy of about 5'8".
Matt.x
P.s. these guys asked to be put on here. Check out their site. It has lots of bands and artists on it... innit.

Good News! We can help you get your music heard! Woo!

Who I'd like to meet:
I'd like to meet interesting and intelligent people around the Burnley/Preston/Manchester/Blackburn area, as well as nice internet people. I'm not a snob and I don't take having piece of paper as proof of intelligence. Some people at uni are as dull as dish water and couldn't think their way out of a paper bag. :-D Some are blindingly clever and fun to be with. Some people who never finished school are also blindingly clever and fun to be with. I'm just after the clever and fun people. The qualifcations are only there to tell us all how good we are at passing exams! (a useful life skill I'm sure you'll agree) and can stay at home. :-)
As for ladies; I'd like to meet anyone (above 18-ish) I can have a good conversation with basically. And hotties too (obviously). Lol.
