Books
Just about anything by Arthur C. Clarke, Neil L. Stephenson, Greg Bear, Ron Forward, Gregory Benford, etc. I'm also fond of books on Celtic mythology and Irish Folk Tales.
For example, I'm currently reading 'Visions and Beliefs in the West of Ireland' by Lady Augusta Gregory (1920!) and 'The Celts: Uncovering the Mythic and Historic Origins of Western Culture' by Jean Markale.
I'm a cinematographer living in Los Angeles. Since work the film industry is unpredictable at best, I end up spending a lot of free time going to shows or clubs, or watching movies.
I'm also a member of the Green Party and very ADD/ADHD. As a result of this wonderful combination, I very frequently stick my foot in my mouth over matters of politics, civil rights, economic justice, gay rights, equality, the environment, the corporate media, etc.
So, if you are easily offended by progressive politics or borderline anarcho-punk ideology, or ever walked out on a TSOL concert because Jack Grisham interrupted the show to go on a rant about something, you probably won't want to be on my friend's list. At least not for very long.
I also do side project to help support the bands in the underground music scene. For example, here's the trailer for a feature length docuemtnary I did on the 2006 Drop Dead Music Festival:
I've also shot music videos for local bands, either pro bono or for whatever they've been able to afford. Here's the latest one I did for a band called Peeling Grey. (Andy had a bad cold for the show and sounds hoarse - I'll be replacing the audio with the studio version of the song shortly).
Who I'd like to meet:
Ian Curtis. And Orson Welles. But I'm not in any hurry to meet either one of them. As far as people who aren't dead yet, I'd like to meet people who like the same kind of music and movies as I do, if for no other reason than we'd have something to talk about when we hit those awkward moments in the conversation when neither one of us can think of anything to say.
If you're a band, please note that unless you fall into one of the genres I listen to (punk, deathrock, goth, post-punk, horror punk, psychobilly, art-punk, new wave, etc.) I probably won't add you to my friends list. I have nothing against other genres, but since I don't listen to them, I think it's kind of silly to include bands from those genres on my friends list.
i wanna job i wanna job i wanna good job i wanna job i wanna job that pays! i wanna job i wanna job i wanna real job one that satisfies- my artistic needs...
Jess, what's up? I'm posting this comment because I, for one, am missing you on the deathrock.com forums. The place isn't quite the same without your endless wit coupled with your Dead Milkmen, They Might Be Giants and Monty Python quotes!
You know I just read that article on why the horror genre is dying on DR.com. I totally agree.
Even though I have jobs coming up on the East Coast, man I am just feeling discouraged right now with this industry... Every time I read another lackluster horror-comedy script somebody sends to me, I just want to jump out the window.
