There is life after death!
Of course it's damn hard to leave people you love behind. That's the sort of experience that never fails to hurt, but once the initial pain of parting has been overcome you may end up realising that you're full of energy and thirsty for action again. At least that's what Felix Flaucher (vocals, lyrics, compositions) and Frank Schwer (guitars, compositions) found. After their extremely successful comeback release 'Phoenix From The Flames', band mastermind Felix Flaucher came to the conclusion that the time had come to close the chapter and to release 'Virgin Mary' under a new name. "The decision definitely wasn't easy for me, after all it has always been and still is an important part of my life, but I just couldn't bear to continue the long-term legal dispute about the band name. I would like to go on creating new songs and new pictures, which will now happen under the moniker of 18 SUMMERS. Naturally, it's impossible to erase the last ten years, and the problem is that there isn't another name to immediately replace a story that has already been established. So it may take some time before people start to connect with the new name what they used to associate with the old name. On the other hand this is also a great opportunity to breathe new life into our own artistic ambitions, seeing that it's impossible to change your whole life. She was shot at the age of 18, and she won't die a second time, even if there's no band around carrying her name," Felix Flaucher comments on the circumstances of the name change. These difficulties, however, had no influence on the music of the band's new masterpiece, 'Virgin Mary'. Quite the opposite! Felix Flaucher and Frank Schwer present themselves at the zenith of their artistic creativity, and the album captivates the listener with its wonderfully dreamy wave gems and synthetically created club hits.
The first category has vibrant acoustic guitars meet string arrangements plus Felix Flaucher's powerfully spheric voice, turning particularly 'Turn Off The Radio', the title track 'Virgin Mary' and 'Heavenly Creatures' into magnificent pop tracks. Naturally, 18 SUMMERS also know how to make their audience dance, relying on powerful electronic beats. 'Girl Of 18 Summers', which is reminiscent of Wolfsheim, and the atmospherically sinister 'Sensation White' are bound to go straight to the listeners' feet. These opposite poles make 'Virgin Mary' an absolutely intoxicating, conclusive sonic experience. The German duo succeeded in enlisting renowned support for the recording of their current release again: Roman Schoensee took care of the electronics, while Kemi Vita lent her unmistakably sensual voice to a number of tracks. John Fryer, who has also worked with the likes of Depeche Mode, Paradise Lost or HIM, was in charge of the final production. "Roman and John both had some very important input when it came to the recording of 'Virgin Mary'. Roman has become something like a third band member, and John Fryer is an absolute professional who did much more than simply perform a good job," Flaucher enthuses. Next to the musical quality, Felix Flaucher's vitriolic pen adds that little extra something to 18 SUMMERS. His lyrics once again tell 'loving' stories about death, romanticism, love and religion. "'Virgin Mary' doesn't have a lyrical concept, most of the words are very personal. They represent my view of the world, and this view isn't necessarily moulded by the bible." A good example is 'Heavenly Creatures', which was inspired by the same-named Peter Jackson movie. It's about two girls, their friendship and the joint murder of the mother of one of the protagonists. "I know two girls who really remind me of the characters in the movie, two strange birds who still live with their parents ..." And here it surfaces again, that black sense of humour that we used to love about them. As you can see, it's still present in 18 SUMMERS.
So there is life after death. 'Virgin Mary' is the perfect and most beautiful proof of that.
Es ist verdammt hart, wenn man sich von liebgewonnenen Personen trennen muß. Das tut immer weh. Doch sobald der erste Trennungsschmerz überwunden ist, stellt man fest, daß man plötzlich wieder voller Energie und Tatendrang steckt. Felix Flaucher (Gesang, Texte, Kompositionen) und Frank Schwer (Gitarre, Kompositionen) ist es so ergangen. Nach ihrem sehr erfolgreichen Comeback-Album "Phoenix From The Flames" reifte in Mastermind Felix Flaucher der Entschluß, einen endgültigen Schlußstrich unter das Kapitel zu ziehen und "Virgin Mary" unter neuem Namen zu veröffentlichen. "Dieser Schritt fiel mir mit Sicherheit nicht leicht, schließlich war und ist es ein wichtiger Teil meines Lebens. Allerdings hatte ich keine Lust mehr, einen jahrelangen Rechtsstreit um die Namensrechte fortzusetzen. Ich möchte weiterhin neue Songs und neue Bilder erschaffen. Das passiert jetzt unter dem Etikett 18 SUMMERS. Nun lassen sich 10 Jahre nicht einfach so ausradieren, und das Problem ist, daß es keinen Namen geben kann, der eine eingeführte Geschichte sofort ersetzt. Es wird also einige Zeit dauern, bis jeder mit diesem neuen Namen das verbindet, was er jetzt vielleicht noch mit demalten Namen assoziiert. Es ist auf der anderen Seite aber auch eine Chance, frischen Wind in die eigenen künstlerischen Ambitionen zu bringen, wenn man schon nicht sein ganzes Leben ändern kann. Sie wurde mit 18 Jahren erschossen, und sie wird kein zweites Mal sterben, selbst wenn es keine Band mehr mit ihrem Namen geben wird", erläutert Felix Flaucher die Umstände, wie es zum neuen Namen kam. Einen Einfluß auf die Musik des neuen Meisterwerkes "Virgin Mary" hatten diese Schwierigkeiten nicht. Ganz im Gegenteil! Felix Flaucher und Frank Schwer zeigen sich auf dem Zenit ihres Könnens. Das Album besticht durch wunderbar verträumte Waveperlen und synthetisch erschaffene Club-Hits.
In der ersten Kategorie treffen beschwingte Akustik-Gitarren auf Streicher-Arrangements und die kraftvoll sphärische Stimme von Felix Flaucher. Besonders "Turn Off The Radio", das Titelstück "Virgin Mary" und "Heavenly Creatures" werden dadurch zu grandiosen Pop-Songs. Selbstverständlich verstehen 18 SUMMERS es auch, ihr Publikum zum Tanzen zu animieren. Dazu setzt man wuchtige Elektronik-Beats ein. Das an Wolfsheim erinnernde "Girl Of 18 Summers" und der athmophärisch-düstere Titel "Sensation White" lassen niemanden still stehen. "Virgin Mary" wird durch diese verschiedenen Pole zu einem absolut berauschenden, in sich stimmigen Klangerlebnis. Für dessen Entstehung hat das deutsche Duo wieder prominente Unterstützung verpflichtet. Roman Schönsee hat sich um die Elektronik gekümmert, während Kemi Vita einigen Songs ihre unnachahmlich sinnliche Stimme geschenkt hat. Die Endproduktion lag in den bewährten Händen von John Fryer, der schon für Depeche Mode, Paradise Lost oder HIM an den Reglern saß. "Roman und John haben beide einen sehr wichtigen Input zu "Virgin Mary" geliefert. Roman ist inzwischen fast so etwas wie ein drittes Bandmitglied geworden, und John Fryer ist ohnehin ein absoluter Profi, der erneut einen mehr als guten Job gemacht hat", schwärmt Flaucher. Das Salz in der Suppe von 18 SUMMERS ist neben der musikalischen Klasse die "spitze" Feder von Felix Flaucher. Seine Texte erzählen wieder einmal "liebevolle" Geschichten zu Tod, Romantik, Liebe und Religion. "Ein thematisches Konzept verbirgt sich hinter "Virgin Mary" nicht. Die meisten Texte sind sehr persönlich. Es ist meine Sicht der Welt. Und diese Sicht ist nicht unbedingt durch die Bibel geprägt." Ein gutes Beispiel ist "Heavenly Creatures". Der Song ist von dem gleichnamigen Film von Peter Jackson inspiriert. Er handelt von zwei Mädchen, ihrer Freundschaft und dem gemeinsam verübten Mord an der Mutter der einen. "Es gibt zwei Mädels, die mich sehr an die Filmpersonen erinnern, zwei verrückte Hühner, die noch bei ihren Eltern wohnen......." Da ist er wieder, der schwarze Humor, für den wir sie immer geliebt haben. Wie man sieht, ist davon bei 18 SUMMERS nichts verloren gegangen.
Es gibt ein Leben nach dem Tod. "Virgin Mary" ist dafür der beste und schönste Beweis.
