.. .. .. ..REVIEWS.... ..WIRE.. January 2008.. HTRK/Duke Garwood - Keep Mother 6 (Fire).. This ongoing split-release series here pairs the scratchy grooves of pan-global group HTRK with the avant blues of Brixton's Duke Garwood. HTRK's "K, Ksext, Erghh" is a segmented bass-driven groove topped off with scratchy guitar and a gritty layer of surface distortion. It flits through numerous variations, jaggedly spliced together, possibly in implicit homage to ..The Faust Tapes... There's also a bit of a blues twang to the guitar, buried beneath the static fuzz and crackly sound. Duke Garwood's blues moaner "Hodiddy" starts out like a particularly ripe pastiche and ends up as a kind of abstract statement. The music is slowed down to a snail's pace, with each riff tortuously wrung out amid vast pauses and the vague drawl of the accompanying vocal. The emphasis shifts from form to mood until, ultimately, it's completely shorn of any narrative quality and reduced to a series of faint, repeated gestures.
