Old School G and Jaro Cossiga by "Old School G" Greg Schick One of the surprises of the Trinity International Hip Hop festival this year was the unexpected appearance of the Czech Beatbox All-Stars. Three members of this ten man collective (Jaro Cossiga, Nasty and Freaky Jezus) had been in New York City for a month promoting their CD Beat Apetit, vibing and recording with some underground beatboxers and emcees, including Baba Israel. Baba brought them along to the festival for his performance where they performed a short set of their own along with a five man beatbox set with Baba and Yako 440. Later they jumped on stage for an impromptu backing of Senegalese emcee Musa Baye. (You've got to love the spontaneity of hip hop!) The crew had to leave that night, but I was eager to speak with more them about their project and hip hop back in the Czech Republic. I finally caught up with Jaro - who I've since found out is something of the "godfather" of beatboxing in Czech Republic and very famous throught the country for his hip hop television series. World Hip Hop Market: Tell me about the trio who came to the Trinity Festival and how you all fit within the hip hop scene in the Czech Republic. Jaro Cossiga: We were there like part of Czech Beatbox Allstars (Together is 10 people performing under this title). That means two crews together. New schoolers Fany and Nasty and BeatBurger Band. I am the founder of BeatBurgerBand. We are three times Czech Team Beatbox Champions and unofficial 2nd in the world in 2005. BeatBurgerBand is a proffesional human beatbox multivocalism project. This show is only for big stages, company events or TV shows where we have an exact playlist with songs . The Czech Beatbox Allstars is just for the Hip Hop scene. It's about a show for young hip hoppers. We don't have stress with this. Many times it is improvisations - like at Trinity. This is the small difference between the projects. We are an important part of European Beatbox Allstars and represented at all events. Jaro Cossiga and Freaky Jezus are "godfathers" of czech beatbox scene. Especailly me - I am leader of Czech beatbox scene, performed since 2000. In 2002, I stated with Jezus a live TV show, the first one hour [hip hop] show on TV [in the Czech Republic]. This brought us fame and the whole czech hip hop scene knows us. After one year, we finished there and jumped directly to the professional Archa Teatre, where we've been for 5 years. We are founders of Czech Hip Hop Theatre. I am member of Archa Lab, and produced there very famous pieces like "Chat" or "Dreaming Andersen" (tours 2004 Europe, 2005 JAPAN, 2006 New York Tribeca Performing Art Center). Next, we brought all of what we learned in theatre back back to hip hop stages to be more interesting then another Czech hip hoppers. So last year we supported stars like 5O Cent, Snoop Dogg, Sugar Hill Gang, Afu-Ra, Swollen Members… WHHM: Tell me about that first trip to New York with the hip hop theatre. Why were you there and what did you do? Jaro: We produced a very special theatre combination between hip hop performence and classic theatre. We were inspired by Hans Christian Andersen and his life and created a theatre piece which was called "Dreaming Andersen". It was spring 2006. We got invitation to New York while on the European Dreaming Festival. We represented Czech Republic there and I had 14 days rest to be in New York with my brother Dowis. I contacted Kid Lucky and he took us under his wings because we lived in his house for free around 16 days. He introduced me to New York and many of his friends. We went on my first Hip Hop Subway Series, it was fantastic. There I met so many cool people, many are now on my CD because I met them one more time this year. We are family. We make history how said - Craz-E! WHHM: Tell me about your Beat Apetit album and how you went from beat boxing to producing hip hop tracks. Jaro: Three years ago I found myself the music software Ableton Live. It's (r)evolution to me. Where I was able to sample just my sounds and from this compose music. I started with scenic music for theatre pieces and pimped my sound from there. Two years ago, I decided to prepare to my first CD [and] asked two younger top beatboxers - Nasty and Fany - to do beats from their human sounds. I showed them my skills and told them the rules. So we decided to do first beatbox CD in Czech Rap. So it was my CD debut FANY and NASTY by JARO COSSIGA. I started collaborating with Jim Beam - they has Beam Label - in Czech and supported Czech hip hop scene. And because I had studied in managment school, I know how to ask for money. So Beam Label give me money to spend one and half month in New York work with artist which I choose. So I asked my others friends Nasty and Jezus, sound man Kuzhell and graff painter and emcee Dowis. I called this HOP'n'NOB Project - Tha Beatbox Expedition 2008. So soon I will release my 2nd CD where I am the original music producer, because I still work only with beatbox sounds. WHHM: What can listeners expect from your new album, Hop'n'Nob? Jaro: Listeners from Czech Republic which understand English could expect very important message from New York underground in year 2008. I introduce my beatbox production in Ableton Live. It's fresh in New York too. I won 2nd place on Subphonik BeatBattle in Brooklyn. One point to be the winner. So I am kicking off a new style of music production which is built on myself. My beatbox is needed to do it. The CD Hop'n'Nob is proof that hip hop is multilanguage which can comunicate between two different cultures. Hip Hop is what is conecting us. Hop'n'Nob is family and this is our positon in world Hip Hop Scene. This CD is not for making money! This CD was born because some people started cyphering. And this is important. This CD was not created by sending files through the Internet. This CD was made face to face, hand in hand, so Hop'n'Nob. I'll broadcast some pieces on 4th October. I'll be perform on Czech festival in Madizon St. See ya there! WHHM: What does the name Hop'n'Nob mean? Jaro: I am glad that nobody knows what the name means. I found it on Internet like very old English phrase for "Hand in Hand". In Czech it's "Ruku v Ruce". New York and Czech Republic hand in hand, my beatbox with brooklyn rap hand in hand. WHHM: What can you tell us about the beatboxers from all over Europe? Jaro: Here there are so many talented young beatboxers. You can recognize it some cultures spices from their country. I am a judge on many EU Beatbox Battles which are supported by Bellow from Beatbox Battle TV. Human Beatboxing slowly but for sure leaving the borders hip hop culture. Beatboxing is something that children love. So it looks like Human Beatbox will be an individual and independent music style. Me and my BeatBurger Band (9 members) are top in Europe. We represent so many difent styles of beatboxing…from Michael Winslow, Kenny Muhammed to Bobby McFerrin. Our band is very strong because we take inspiration from around the world. We are more performers than only beatboxers. In Czech Rapublic, they accept beatboxing like art because we are more visible like beatbox performers and musians than hip hoppers, and this is the paradox. And in Europe, beatboxing is very popular. WHHM: Are you still doing your television show? What is it called? Jaro: Oh no, it was 2003. Me and Freaky Jezus, it was called "5.Element" and was live every week. We made it one year and after that, started work in professional Archa Theatre, which changed my life. It was my High School. I pimped my self like beatbox-performer. We started to use beatbox like another theatre language. We started with czech hiphop theatre. This year is my comeback to czech hip hop scene with the Hop'N'Nob. WHHM: Do you get a chance to perform with Baba Israel and/or Rabbi D when they visit Prague? Jaro: Of course. Rabbi started here thanks to my first project, Beat Apetit. This year homies like Rabbi, Baba, Yako, Farbeon, Concept, Dyalect, DJ MilkMoney, DJ Kevlar were here…so we are connected. All performances are booked by our crew DaSkaRecords or Pantheon. Guys are usually hardcore busy. We prepare a crazy schedule for them. Shows, TV, performance, dinner, video clip shooting, traveling, radio, interviews, etc. Last week we performed together at Hip Hop Kemp. WHHM: Tell me about Hip Hop Kemp this year, what it was like and how you participated. Jaro: I hosted the first two years of this festival. Every year we performed there with our hip hop theatre or beatbox team. Every year is a Czech Beatbox Battle which is organised by me and Beelow from Berlin. This year we had very special Beatbox FastFood with healthy sandwiches. We got a small stage and good P.A. for our powerul beatbox. We promoted my cd Hop'n'Nob with the possibility to participate in beatbox or freestyle battle. The winner got a free sandwich. It was funny. How Baba said..we killed there! Vyprodané divadlo Archa slaví vydání první desky ceského beatboxu, tedy hudebního stylu, k nemu patrí naštvaní zvukari a lehká prezíravost širšího publika. Žabí kvákání a lambáda Vyprávení o pocátcích predního ceského beatboxera pripomene pametníkum Strýcka Jedlicku. Hrozne si vážím spolupráce s lidmi jako Jarda Traband, Michal Nejtek, Jaroslav Korán, Varhan Orchestrovic Bauer, Agnes Kutas, Peter Adamov, Klarinet Factory, Šimon Ornest, Frank van de Ven, Min Tanaka, Navigators..." V Arše totiž minulý týden vstoupilo do života první ceské beatboxové album Beat Apetit, kterého má kolovat asi 35 tisíc kusu. Beatbox opouští hranice hiphopové kultury a díky nekolika málo lidem získává vetší uplatnení. Už nemusíme vykládat, co je beatbox. Lidi už to vedí. Zacíná být svébytným žánrem. Ješte tomu ale dejme cas..."
