Demo Against Cruel Research
Where: Near Magnuson Health Science Center (corner of NE Pacific St & Montlake Blvd, across the street from Husky Stadium)
Description: We will be taking advantage of the large numbers of people that come to attend the UW Graduation on June 13th, by having a demo right before the ceremony starts. We want to bring attention to the kinds of torture going on at the University of Washington in the name of science.
The Primate Center at the UW, isn't working on cures for cancer or any other disease, they stick metal coils into the eyes of monkeys, then strap them into chairs to watch their eye movement. Groundbreaking stuff, right? And it's been going on for 30 years, so they must really be learning something, huh? We are going to let the public know just what their money is paying for at the UW's Primate Center and at the other UW animal labs.
We will have signs, but please feel free to make your own.
If you would like to help, or have questions, E-mail Us..
Prohibit Susan Stern
Ask the University of Washington (UW) to prohibit new hire Susan Stern from conducting experiments on animals, including brain injury and massive bleeding experiments on live pigs using a $1.2 million grant from the Department of Defense.
Before accepting a position at UW, Stern worked at the University of Michigan (U-M), where she chaired the animal experimentation oversight committee from 2006 to 2008. On Stern's watch, animals in the university's laboratories died of starvation and dehydration. When a fire broke out in a lab, trapped animals died of smoke inhalation or drowned as their cages filled with water from the sprinkler system, and others were so severely injured that they had to be euthanized. UW is already under fire for violations in its laboratories. Acting on evidence provided by PETA in 2007, federal investigators found that UW experimenters performed dozens of surgeries on monkeys without approval from the university's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Given UW's own record, Susan Stern's proven record of disregard for animal welfare guidelines is the last thing that UW and animals need.
Take Action:Please contact University of Washington President Mark Emmert and urge him to prohibit Susan Stern from conducting experiments on animals in UW's laboratories. Check out PETA's Action Alert to see a sample letter.

Over 20,000,000 million animals suffer and die in U.S. laboratories every year. These innocent victims are subjected to addictive drugs, caustic chemicals, ionizing radiation, chemical and biological weapons, electric shock, deprivation of food and/or water, psychological torture and many other horrors.
In the United States approximately 1100 labs experiment on animals every day. During 2006 the number of primates used in experimentation reached an all time high -- 62,315. These animals are depending on us to fight for their freedom.

NARN is not letting the UW off the hook. Thanks to the efforts of PETA and SAEN (Stop Animals Exploitation Now), hundreds of documents have been uncovered that show flagrant abuses by animal researchers. The scientists that claim their work is necessary and done only to help people have blatantly ignored their own staff veterinarians. Aside from the incredibly sloppy science these doctors practice, how exactly, does inserting electrodes into the brains of monkeys help people?
We have confirmed widespread violations of animal protection regulations involving studies in which experimenters cut off the tops of monkeys' skulls, insert electrodes into their brains, and implant wire coils in their eyes. The monkeys are then restrained in experimentation chairs, with their heads bolted in place so that they can't move while experimenters track their eye movements. They are kept hungry or thirsty much of the time so that they'll comply during tests to get a sip of water or a bite of food.

Thanks to everyone who came to the demonstration on March 8th.

University Of Washington Primate Center.
Behind this non-descript blue building located at 3010 Western Ave. in Seattle, hundreds of primates are subjected to a life and death filled with pain and despair.
We've posted some pictures of the demo HERE.
On Tuesday, 26 February, KOMO TV in Seattle ran an expose' of unauthorized and extremely painful sugeries performed on monkies at UW, and the resulting investigation by the USDA which may lead to defunding and penalties. Here is KOMO's report:
The University of Washington, along with the affiliated Washington Regional Primate Research Center (WaRPRC), breeds, confines and experiments on tens of thousands of animals every year, with little, if any accountability to students and the public.
Federal taxpayer funding for animal testing at UW exceeded a quarter billion dollars last year. Concerned students and citizens are starting to ask the tough questions, like where are the results? How do animals serve as good models for human health? And why is it morally justifiable to experiment on animals at all?
Please... get educated, get active, and help stop these cruel and wasteful practices at the University of Washington. .... ..

Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are like us.' Ask the experimenters why it is morally OK to experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are not like us.' Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction."
-Professor Charles R. Magel
As many as 115 million animals are experimented on and killed in laboratories in the U.S. every year. Much of the experimentation-including pumping chemicals into rats' stomachs, hacking muscle tissue from dogs' thighs, and putting baby monkeys in isolation chambers far from their mothers-is paid for by you, the American taxpayer and consumer, yet you can't visit a laboratory and see how the government has spent your money. You can't even get an accurate count on the number of animals killed every year because experimenters and the government have decided that mice and rats and certain other animals don't even have to be counted.
Animal experimentation is a multibillion-dollar industry fueled by massive public funding and involving a complex web of corporate, government, and university laboratories, cage and food manufacturers, and animal breeders, dealers, and transporters. The industry and its people profit because animals, who cannot defend themselves against abuse, are legally imprisoned and exploited.
Fortunately for animals in laboratories, there are people who care. Some of them work in labs, and when they witness abuse, they call PETA. Thanks to these courageous whistleblowers, PETA's undercover investigators and caseworkers, who sift through reams of scientific and government documents, have exposed what goes on behind laboratory doors.

As tears fall from my eyes and roll over mycheekas a rain of sadness I pray for the salvationof innocence but my mourning soul and bleeding heart know they are prayers upon deaf ears for i have witnessed so much disregard in the actionsof our greed ridden civilization. After all the pain after all the suffering non human animals have to endure imprisoned in the factory farms, tortured in the vivisection laboratories and killed in the slaugther houses symbols of ignorance and cruelty, i hope that somewhere thereis a place where they can finally rest in peace but the sad and bitter truth is that no heaven awaits us only on hell that man creates on earth, an hell that burns everything on its path leaving ashes of desolation in its wake. Dominion over nature ensures our demise for we destroy the unique life support system we'll ever have this beautiful planet wich brought us into the sunlight.
Love compassion and justice are not just beautiful words they are a weapon against the greed and selfishness of the society we live in.
Love compassion and justice are a weaponfor a revolution in the mind and in the soul of every man and every woman a revolutionfor the coming of harmony.
Veganism is compassion, is justice, is a tool for love and caring to prevail on this earth. The only true hapiness is the one we all share in total freedom.
