The
music that I do as a solo artist (I also have a band here called THE
NEURONS ), ranges depending on the mood. As a painter may
not wish to make varations of the same painting for a lifetime, I like
to explore different musical areas. If we must use labels: ACOUSTIC,
WORLD BEAT, NEW AGE, ELECTRONIC, MEDITATION is a start.
THE FOLLOWING ARE THREE AREAS OF MY WORK.
1. MY SOLO ALBUMS
2.
POETRY and WRITING: I also have a poetry area at my site
as well as various articles I write for a number of magazines.
3. MUSICAL
INSTRUMENTS: Another thing I dabble in is building musical
instruments such as GUITARS, BASSES, BANJO'S, DULCIMERS HUMMELS, PSALTRIES
and more.
A
ten stringed Swedish Hummel I made for Daryl Hall
"People are generally
frightened by diversity", states Luthier, Composer, and Multi-Instrumentalist
Paul Adams. "It does have its commercial setbacks, but it's natural
for me. I love the idea of unity within diversity, so I try to encompass
many cultures and traditions in music."
Adams was a student of Ethnomusicology
where he became interested in building ethnic and exotic musical instruments.
But, "making music was really my first love". It was during
this period that he began composing commercials for major companies throughout
the world
Next came his critically
acclaimed debut album Various
Waves. Various' marriage of Jazz, New Age, World Music, Folk,
and other Ethnic traditions struck the right chord with many fans and
critics alike!! It was placed in the TOP FIVE of new releases for 1990
by Musical Starstreams, the largest commercially syndicated instrumental
radio show in America.
Next came the exciting and
award winning Latin, African, World and Fusion oriented Wonder
Dancing On Global Bop, Followed by the acoustic fingerstyle
guitar landscape A
View From The Plain. "This CD is my ode to the Prairie,
as well as a nod to folks like Aaron Copeland, John Fahey, Leo Kottke,
and David Grissman.
When Adams' friend Dave Hoffman
left for his world tour as Ray Charles' Trumpet/Flugelhorn
soloist, he dropped off a bag full of DAT tapes and the result was Hoffman's
absolutely beautiful From
Energy To Stillness . Adams said, "it's soulful, organic,
and honest. It's where I wish smooth jazz would have gone.
A large part of the artistic
process is growth and risk, and his album In
The Land Where I Come From was the next progressive step.
"I wanted the album to swing, and integrate my poetry in a mystical/musical
context. So, using harmonies with my voice was the most logical choice."
His album THE
PROPERTY OF WATER was created with a sense of healing. It's
vehicle is meant to be a meditative journey AND won the best album of
the year award from WIND ANDWIRE Magazine in 1998. Adams
album THIS
CHRISTMAS came next.. "I wanted to keep the mood steady
and acoustic throughout, so I focused primarily on acoustic instruments
such as Guitar, Mandolin, Dobro, and Dulcimer.
Adams recently created
a band called THE NEURONS
with David Hoffman. It's prime motive was to create a fusion of Dance,
Movement, and Groove, using elements of improvisation using ethnic and
traditional instruments. SMOOTH VIBES Magazine in Germany
says "From time to time I find music which is unusual, unique and
original. Not a copy of anything, a pathfinder and pioneer. Music that
realizes new ideas, instruments or styles.. That's THE NEURONS."
His love of the voice of The
Native American Flute resulted in FLUTE
MEDITATIONS For DREAMING CLOUDS. This meditative and serene
album utilizes traditional Natve Flute with middle eastern sensibilities.
This album has been downloaded 50,000 times since being placed on the
web site (Although available, it has not yet been officially released.)
