Bio

The Laurels are a shoegaze band from Sydney whose psychedelic juggernaut has accumulated accolades, guitar pedals and fans in approximately equal proportion.

The band is comprised of 4 members.

Piers Cornelius - Guitar / Vocals

Luke O’Farrell – Guitar / Vocals

Conor Hannan – Bass

Kate Wilson - Drums

Formed in Sydney's inner-west in 2006, The Laurels share a range of visions and influences extending from sonic pioneers The Velvet Underground to the pure shoegaze bliss of My Bloody Valentine, the inner city filth of Australian legends The Saints and the trance-like psychedelia of Spacemen 3, all the way back to the lush pop harmonies of The Beatles.

After several nine hour rehearsals (mostly spent eating) they entered and eventually won the 2007 Sydney University Band Competition - a fair trade off considering the amount of money they had paid the judges. Not long after they begun their travels on the Hume Highway, cementing a loyal fan-base along the east-coast of Australia with their intense live show and sonic brilliance. The Laurels have been lucky enough to share stages alongside the likes of Low, Tame Impala, You Am I, Cloud Control, A Place To Bury Strangers, Love Of Diagrams and Belles Will Ring to name but a few.

To date the band have released a 7" which was launched at the Hopetoun Hotel (R.I.P) in 2009. Their debut EP "Mesozoic" is due out on July 8th!

Press

‘‘It’s not often that a support band upstages the headline act, but The Laurels completely owned Thursday night at the Oxford Arts Factory. Channelling The Jesus & Mary Chain by way of Primal Scream and Kasabian – no, seriously…so fucking good at what they do, you cannot help but get caught up in it all’’ – Drum Media

‘‘The Laurels are one of those bands that in a relatively short life have amassed a good share of acclaim without having released so much as an EP. What may come as a surprise is that they deserve the acclaim’’ – Fasterlouder.com

‘‘The Laurels are a pretty cool band’’ – Adam Franklin / Swervedriver

‘‘It would be hard to describe The Laurels without the sentence “coolest upcoming band in Sydney right now” in there somewhere’’ – Throwshapes.com.au

"They remind me of My Bloody Valentine, but within this forge their own path, heading more towards psychedelic territory. It’s a very compelling sound that slowly drags you in. They’re live show is very impressive and quite an experience. They’ve got screeching guitars, a dual vocalist setup and best of all, two leads that look like Craig Nicholls in different stages of his career (destruction?)" - openyoureyestomusic.com
