About the show:
"1978" was created in 2002 with the purpose of promoting musical genres of relatively difficult and/or underground access, which usually stand without general promotion at all levels.
"1978" is broadcast weekly on RUC, an independent Radio Station licensed since the 80's, but with roots tracing go back to the 30's as an experimental radio centre. RUC doesn't have the "usual" commercial obligations so we are encouraged to give airplay to new and upcoming artists, "1978" is not about playing the "same old" over and over.
1978 goes through many alternative genres and has become a cult radio show over the years. The show shifts gears throughout different decades, genres and themes in an unique way.
From the most obscure demo tapes and vinyl records from the early 80's rarely (or never) heard on any radio, to the latest and most thrilling new alternatives, 1978 is able to capture a wide audience, while keeping true to its roots, and the listener hanging tight for the next song, and always coming back for the next show.
"1978" goes on air every Sunday from 11pm to Midnight, and an online broadcast is also provided on the radio station's website.
Some of the show's related highlights:
- Several interviews with important bands such as Bauhaus, The Mission UK, Lacrimosa, Sanguis Et Cinis, Suicide Commando, Zombina & The Skeletones and hundreds more.
- Organized "The Isolation Chamber" 2-day alternative festival in 2002.
- Media partner to dozens of important events and gigs, including Official Media Partner to Drop Dead Lisbon (2008).
- About a dozen of "1978 Sessions", with local alternative bands performing and being broadcast live in the show. Some of these include Phantom Vision, Noctívagus, Twilight Garden, Dr. Zilch, The Dead Poets and more.
About the author:
Gonçalo Vasco has been involved in music since ever. Besides working as a sound technician (and later graduating in London's prestigious School Of Audio Engineering) since the late 90's, he was admitted in RUC and acquired certified training on both the technical side of radio as well as on broadcasting/producing shows.
He started out producing radio shows in 2001 and created "1978" in 2002, which has been on air ever since. "1978" is currently the station's third oldest show still airing, a fact which demonstrates its success and dependability.
Gonçalo Vasco also started DJing, having played all throughout the country, including on Lisbon's "Graveyard Sessions" and "Final Hour", and being a resident DJ on the "Dark Gatherings" club nights.
Has produced and worked closely with new alternative bands such as [In]Perfektion, Bal Onirique and Disclosure, as well as working as an assistant engineer (while at his former professional studio) with renowned bands such as Bunny Ranch, Belle Chase Hotel, The Other Side and on Tiguana Bibles' first studio recordings (back when they hadn't even decided on a name).
Gonçalo Vasco has also been on the editorial staff of magazines such as Sol de Pedra, Elegy Ibérica and NOIR, and has recently collaborated in Mick Mercer's "Music To Die For" book.
"1978" can be heard weekly, on Sunday nights, from 11pm to midnight, on R.U.C. (107.9 FM - Portugal) or through the radio's permanent online broadcast.
Gonçalo Vasco is also part of the editorial staff of ELEGIA MAGAZINE (Formerly ELEGY IBÉRICA MAGAZINE, distributed in Portugal, Spain, Brazil & Latin America, and Latin Communities around the world).
Gonçalo Vasco also votes for the Portuguese Alternative Charts (P.A.C.)

The BEST way for artists to promote their work in the UK.
Who I'd like to meet: Any related bands, DJs, labels, artists who'd like to see their work exposed on Portugal's only dark alternative radio show airing weekly on a licenced radio station since 2002.
1978 is NOT an podcast or internet radio show. It is done ON AIR and LIVE in the studio every Sunday.
Also make sure you visit the show's webpage and create an account to access the forums, be able to comment, and post suggestions on possible first-page news articles and general contents.
1978 is willing to promote any related band or label (with airplay on both the radio show and live DJ sets and on the webpage, interviews, reviews, live on-air promotional giveaways, or anything you find interesting to be done) , just check in the webpage and send an email telling us a bit about your project and requesting the show's promotional snail mail address.
