  • Bio

"...hopeful and old-fashioned, yearning for the innocence of childhood but comfortably grown-up nonetheless." - City Pages "...full of intimate, introspective and sometimes melancholy folk in the vein of Lisa Germano, with a turn towards twangy country..." - The Onion AV Club Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter, Mary Everest, tried to mimic every vocal detail in the top 40 hits crumbling out of her crappy boom box, perched in the second-story bedroom that she and her sister shared… with fuchsia carpeting. She also loved sitting next to her dad on Sunday mornings in the church pew so that she could listen to all his harmonies when it was time to sing. She began to write heart-wrenching love songs on the piano in her pre-teen years and picked up a guitar when she was sixteen. Fortunately, she eventually discovered that she likes Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone more than Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. Janet Jackson, however, sometimes still kicks ass. Between 1993 and 2009, she performed on and off with with brother and collaborator JG Everest (Lateduster, Sensational Joint Chiefs, Roma Di Luna). Along the way, she also collaborated and performed with Dosh, ElizaBlue, Roma di Luna, Ryan Lovan, Ben Durrant, Barbara Morgenstern (Berlin), Captain Blasted, The Sensational Joint Chiefs and Sans Le Systeme in its incarnation as an experimental improv project with JG Everest, Tim Glenn and Sistah Mimi. In the mid 90’s, she and JG recorded eight songs at Rich Mattson’s Flowerpot Studio and put them out on cassette. In 1999, she released a song on the Twin Town High Volume 2 compilation and in 2003, she added vocal work to Martin Dosh’s debut CD “dosh.” In 2007, Mary recorded her first full-length album “little things” with a full band at Ben Durant’s Crazy Beast Studio. She and JG played a double CD release show at the Bryant Lake Bowl with a four-piece string section, including: Bethany Seppy, Channy Moon Casselle, Elizabeth Bonacci and Jessica Haysen, with both Ryan Lovan and Damon Ewing on drums, and Nate Pederson on bass. Also in 2007, Everest appeared as a musical guest in Electric Arc Radio’s “Hart to Hart… of Darkness” in which she managed to end up knockin’ boots with the squirrel-coat-wearing, forest-dwelling, weather-ravaged Herbach. “Be my Squirrel Queen,” he cried “and have my many children!” The performance aired on 89.3 The Current the following January. In 2008, she played sensitive and earnest Jessica – one half of the avant-garde twee pop sensation "Moon Island” in Electric Arc’s fall production "Don't Crush Our Heart: a Musical Legal Thriller About a Twee Band." Although Moon Island was a fictitious band, they released a six-song EP with magical melodies about clouds, kittens and plaid. Film-maker John Akre put together a short animation piece, illustrating the Moon Island song "I Feel Tight." You can watch it here: http://sloppyfilms.blip.tv/file/1822304/ Mary has been featured as a guest on MPR's "The Local Show," KFAI's "Womenfolk," Radio K's "Off the Record," and as part of the song-writers' symposium on "The Works," a monthly writer's salon at the Bryant Lake Bowl hosted by Lightsey Darst. Currently, she’s in cocoon mode – working on material for her second CD and arranging new songs with band-mates Nate and Damon (both formerly of the Sensational Joint Chiefs). Making her way out of hibernation, she prepares for a return to the stage this spring with a bundle of new songs. Dates will be added to the concert calendar as they roll in… For booking or to purchase a CD, send an email to maryeverestbooking@gmail.com "little things" is also available for purchase at independent Minneapolis record stores: The Electric Fetus and Cheapo Records.
