More About The Jena Six: In Jena, Louisiana, six Black youths who stood up to racism are facing a lifetime in prison. The six high school students were charged with attempted murder for a schoolyard fight. The fight was initiated by white students, who hung three nooses in a tree at the high school courtyard, to warn black students not to sit there. After this hate crime was dismissed as a harmless prank by the school administration, black students protested under the tree. The local District Attorney was called in to warn the black students that he could take their life away with the stroke of a pen. The nooses led to a series of fights between white and black students. After these fights, only the black students were charged-with attempted murder. The prosecutor has refused to back down in prosecuting these young men, or to admit that hanging nooses is a hate crime.

About me:

.. .. .. Fyre Youth Squad is a diverse group of self determined youth ages 14-24 living in the greater New Orleans area who want to effect positive educational change and create a “world-class” learning environment in all New Orleans Public Schools. Fyre Youth Squad (FYS) is a youth led, youth governed organization that meets twice a week after school to discuss pertinent issues plaguing the New Orleans educational institutions. FYS actively seeks to create solutions for the many problems facing New Orleans Public School students, advocates for accountability of our elected officials and policy makers, and promotes awareness and activism amongst the children and youth of New Orleans. Inception FYS was born out of a series of youth forums organized by the Downtown Neighborhood Improvement Association’s (DNIA) Education Committee during the summer of 2006. These youth forums were designed to create a safe space for young people to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns about the state of education in New Orleans. The “I Have a Dream…School” Youth Forum held on June 17th focused the discussion on “My idea of a dream school is…” In this forum youth shared their visions of a dream school where students would feel respected and learners would be the top priority. The young people in attendance together dreamt of a school that would provide a wide variety of extra curricular activities, vocational training opportunities, access to quality books, individual laptops, and resources like they’ve seen in schools on TV. Youth Forum attendees asserted that inclusion of these elements would make education accessible, fun, and meaningful to every learning style. The "Community Open Mic Youth Forum”, held on July 15th posed the question to the youth, “If I were in charge of New Orleans public schools I would change…” This second forum produced more great ideas and thought provoking solutions including the creation of a youth league that eventually evolved into the Fyre Youth Squad. World Class Education On October 9, 2006, FYS held a press conference on the steps of John McDonogh Senior High School in response to the horrific conditions they were experiencing in their first month on the Recovery School District’s campuses. With the world watching, they boldly presented their statements and a list of demands for immediate and long term improvements in all of New Orleans public schools. The impact of their words was felt by many who empathize and were inspired by their organic youth movement. Since the press conference, FYS has met with several elected officials, school board members, and Recovery School District administrators including the superintendent, Dr. Robin Jarvis to discuss immediate actions needed to address these pressing issues. The youth movement for the right to a quality education has taken root in New Orleans and FYS has taken on the challenge of advocating for and creating a world class community centered public education system for all young people in New Orleans and the nation. DNIA Education Committee, a 501c3 Non-Profit, now serves as the adult support group to the Fyre Youth Squad. The “Ed Committee” is a diverse group of parents, educators, community members, and citizens of New Orleans, who are committed and working regularly to create a “world class community centered” learning environment in New Orleans public schools.
