The observance of Mother's Day has become widespread since the Civil War, even though it is not original with this country. British mums were honored on Mothering Day long before. Here, it was the idea of peace activist Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the lyrics to "Battle Hymn of the Republic," to the melody of a Methodist hymn, intending to rally mothers against war.
The composer was World War I veteran Howard Johnson, not he of restaurant and motel fame, but a pianist in Boston theaters during the silent movie era. He was a staff song writer from 1920s to 1940s in Tin Pan Alley in New York, writing this one in 1915,
