FAN BLOG: 1RKO
It's all rock and roll baby.
In the sad but true continuing struggle of what is or isn't metal or rock or grindcore or death or black or doom, etc. etc., some bands just simply get it. Those who like these bands get it too. What they, the fans get, is that it's all rock and roll.
Lately there has been a surge of bands that I'll dub for the fun of it Throwback Metal. HA! How y'all liking that shit, a new fucking genre started right here. Whatever. Anyway, thanks be to MySpace for offering creative bands, some more than others, a place to market their craft.
1RKO = First Round KnockOut is one band that not only takes advantage of MySpace, but holy shit, they fucking get it. They get it to the point that they searched the library hard to find this book instructing them in the ways of Rock. A look at the card inside (yes they used to put these cards inside on who checked the book out, I'm old get over it) shows previous readers to be Kiss, Deep Purple, Mountain, Boston, AC/DC, and Def Leppard.
Simon Daniels is a fucking gifted genius. Song writing is simple, straight forward, memorable, and catchy. Guitars are basic as it gets, but key and powerful to giving this band a big set of balls. Simon's voice is very very solid. I hear a little Gene Simmons in there and perhaps of couple years off from having that face slapping power of Paul Stanley (it comes with practice and years). Behind Simon is a rhythm section that can't go unnoticed adding a wonderful swing and bounce to the big balled guitar. Derek can't go unnoticed using his guitar like a 10,000 watt amp to give that full fucking power boost bringing this whole thing to a complete knock out.
Songs: Fox on the Run? Are kidding me. I laughed when I saw it listed there not sure how well this would be pulled off. Glory to the 70's it kicks fucking ass. Although their MySpace site is only blessed with only two originals "One More Time" and "The Man" reflect their "classic-rock" sound, but show their originality both lyrically and musically. I believe "One More Time" could hit rock stations (both classic and modern) and dominate the hot rotation right now. The other cover, AC/DC's "Hell's Bells", damn near brings a tear to my eye as chills run down my spine. Using that middle eastern sound to the opening lick is creepy and very powerful and one can't help but get the head a bobbin' once the nicely distorted powerchord kicks in. Now, Simon does NOT sing like Bon Scott or Brian Johnson, but that's where this cover gets amazing. It's so well done that "Hell's Bells" by 1RKO damn near sounds original.
1RKO is a kickass band name. It's even more impressive because they can back it up. Don't bother getting into the ring with this band, if you want them to open for you, you better be prepared to bring it on your own set.
