Hugh Thomas Smith “He was so healthy!” “We all want a body like Tom’s!” “How could a healthy man die!” could all be the title of this story as that is exactly, to this day, what people say that knew Tom before his death! My beloved, Tom, age 65, University professor, marathon runner, avid basketball player and 6 days a week weight room fanatic; he did not let down one day on exercise! He was an athlete! We planned out vacations around gyms, sporting events, World Series, the Olympics and tournaments. Tom grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio living adjacent to the University of Cincinnati fieldhouse where he played and enjoyed games of all kinds since he was 5 years old. Tom was my brother’s friend so when I met him the first time, I was in the third grade. We married after he had completed 4 years of college locally and 3 years of military duty in France. We finished undergrad at Cleveland State, then masters at Miami of Ohio, Tom completed courses up to his oral dissertation. Tom’s first English teaching job was in Blanchester, Ohio. Let’s see that would be in 1963. In 2003 after 42 years of marriage, 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren, Tom started experiencing low performance during a 10 mile run. He decided to see our GP and see what might be taking place. We found out right away that he was anemic. His IgM level was elevated. Urine sample said trace protein in the urine. This one trip led to many doctors offices, a heart cath, stress test, echo cardiogram, endoscopy, PET, CAT, colonoscopy, many blood samples and urine samples, urologist, nephrologists – YOU NAME IT WE WENT!! Everyone said he looked just fine – healthy specimen, but bleeding somewhere. Finally we were sent to a hematologist in December 2003; we had mentioned to our GP about going to a hematologist last October. She did a bone marrow biopsy and said he had Waldenstroms Macroglobulenemia on January 8, 2004. Eight weeks of rituxan was scheduled and on # 8, our hemo told us it, the rituxan, for some reason was not working. By this time, Tom’s legs and ankles were swollen and he could hardly get up a flight of stairs. In the emergency room in late March, we were told he had Congestive Heart Failure! What a shock when we were told just months before that by our cardiologist “that you will never have heart problems, your heart is great and healthy”! Tom & I were devastated, shocked, afraid, angry and saddened by his rapid decline. Here is this man who was the picture of health one-day and having congestive heart failure and Waldenstroms cancer the next! We were in Kettering Hospital for 2 weeks in which time Tom was given a kidney biopsy. We were told that it was possible he had amyloids in his kidneys; it took 2 weeks to get the results back from a lab in Cincinnati, why so long, we do not know? We, also, did not know what it meant to have amyloids and NO ONE told us this might be life threatening. We were thinking NOW THEY know what it is so they will be able to fix it and we will get our life back!!! The doctors, including our hematologist at Kettering, wanted us to go to The James Cancer Center in Columbus to see Dr. Pierluigi Porcu who was doing research in Waldenstrom’s so off we went to Columbus. Unbeknownst to me/us this was our last trip in the car together. We went slowly, ate a quiet dinner at a Waffle House on the way and talked of his getting better, of trips we wanted to take, places in Europe we wanted to see, Tom’s current English class at U.D., friends and family we wanted to share with.. Our room at The James was waiting for us. I was to sleep in the same room as Tom, thank G-d. Many tests are performed, x-rays taken, urine samples, blood samples all the time, 24 hour catheter which took 2 tries by nurses that did not work and were terribly painful; they finally got an urologists to do the job!, plasmaphesis many times; port had to be inserted, then a heart biopsy was performed and we were told amyloids were in his kidneys and the heart. Tom & I still thought he could be fixed! We did not think he was going to die! One-week end, around April 20 we were moved to the BMT unit and Tom was put on dialysis as his kidneys had failed. It took about 4 days till Tom said he could not be on that bed forever. He could not go on 3-day dialysis as his heart was only pumping at 45% so this machine was all he had to live! Tom asked me or told me, I am not sure which, if he could have this machine turned off. Dr. Porcu was called and explained to us that Tom would have 48 hours to live if he turned off the machine. I told him, of course, if that is what he wanted that I understood “a person who had been as active as he had would not want to live plugged into a machine and never be able to leave the hospital!!!” So it was done! Why didn’t I object vehemently? We called Tom’s friends and family, colleagues and everyone who knew him came, that could, and said their good-byes. Looking back I was in a fog. This was the “love of my life” going to be gone from me forever? I did not understand and I don’t think he did either; we spent hours just staring at each other in disbelief. He was not afraid to die, although he was not a religious man, he told me it would be harder on me than it was on him. I wish I knew what his world was like now? Tom was an intelligent, humorous, humanitarian, good, kind, gentle, giving, understanding and loving man who loved me, his family and loved to write sci-fi, horror and fantasy for fun – www.turnipsoup.com – is his website build by our son, Scott. Tom died April 30, 2004 in my arms and with his 3 children lying beside him. He was buried in Leesburg, Ohio beside his father on May 3, 2004 just 2 days after my 60th birthday. Not a day goes by when I don’t want to share something with him, ask him something, get his opinion on an issue or look into that lovely bearded face. I miss him so much – there are no words. POSTSCRIPT: I suspect now it was amyloidosis all along that killed Tom. If a Congo red stain had been taken earlier, Tom would probably be alive today, maybe not healthy, but alive. Amyloidosis was not thought of or mentioned till way to late in Tom’s treatment. On November 1, 2004, I buried Tom’s Mom, age 98, along side Tom. Email: turnips@cinci.rr.com MyLayout Profile Editor I am interested in getting a cure for Amyloidosis which is a protein folding disease that killed my husband. Our story is here: http://www.amyloidosissupport.com/memoriam/Hugh_Thomas_Smith.html www.amyloidosissupport.com for information - Here is some information about Amyloidosis: Amyloidosis is a rare and serious disorder that can affect many organs in the body, including the heart, kidney, liver and nerves. Diagnosis is difficult, because amyloidosis resembles other medical problems. Symptoms can include unexplained weight loss, leg swelling, shortness of breath and fatigue. People with amyloidosis may also have arm and leg numbness, carpal tunnel symptoms, changes in their nails and foamy urine. Swallowing problems can also be a part of the puzzle of amyloidosis. With early diagnosis, amyloidosis can be treated. For more information call toll free 866-404-7539. .. • Music

I went into the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life and to see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, I discoverd, I had not lived. Henry David Thoreau .. Image provide By: http://www.myspacedesigns.net/

I used to enjoy country and R&R, but music is tied to 42 years with my husband who died 4/30/04 so I can't listen to music right now, maybe some day... If I would listen to music for my enjoyment, it would be classical and musicals...I did listen to country at one time and sometimes I enjoy hearing a song or two......

My grandson listens to his music when we are in the car and I listen to what he likes. Some of his music is quite nice.....great beats!!

When I am by myself, I listen to talk radio and enjoy it very much! - Yes that conservative stuff!! .. MyLayout Profile Editor

  • Movies

I haven't watched many movies in my life, but have read hundreds of books. Let's see I've seen Ghost Busters 1 & 2 a number of times, Napolean Dynamite, all the Harry Potter movies, the Grudge with daughter and son-in-law and Forrest Gump!! Probably since Tom died, I've seen more movies than the whole time we were married. Going to a movie is not my favorite thing to do. Joey & I saw all the Caribbean of the Sea movies with Jonny Depp. We saw Juno and 57 Dresses which was so cute and others........

  • Television

I listen instead of watch TV. I watch news mainly - Fox News in the morning. I leave the TV on all day for background chatter. It seems to help, blocks out memories although memories are all I have; I am making new memories. I'm trying to move ahead and make my own new memories. I am hooked on some of the soaps since I am home and have them on when I am working on the computer. In the evening I like Jeopardy and Wheel.... I've watched "Idol" "Amnesia" "1 Against the Mob" "millionaire" and some of other game shows. Super Nanny and Wife Swap are fun to watch also......

About me:

Post to MySpace! Share on MySpace!

Daughter & I have a registered TICA Cattery named OYA. Check out our web site www.russianpeterbald.com and look at our beautiful cats. I have my favorites that sleep with me every nite. "Petey" a brush coat (wire coat) Peterbald, his Mother, Zsa Zsa ("LITL"), "Butters" "Baby" "Czar" who are all Oriental Short Hair and "Ivanna Trump" ("Vanna"). One other sleeps with me also and that is "VooVoo" who is a blue OS. Willie hobbles around on 3 legs as 2 months ago he was shot by a hunter. Willie likes to go out and hunt along with his DLH borhter Blackie. He came home leaving a trail of blood and hobbles into the house. We immediately took him to the vet. He did not loose his leg, but cannot use it to walk either. He does use it now to reach up to my face so I will pet him or to scratch in the litter box so have a little use. Poor baby! We have 12 cats at the moment. Kristi has Niki, a bi-color tan/white PD, an Odd-eyed white girl named Jazmine (Jazzy), a black/white Bengal baby who is a riot and will be bigger than all our OS or PD. So that is our menagerie of cats at this time. Most of them sleep in my room on the heating blanket.
IF PURR-ING COULD BE ENCAPSULATED, IT'D BE THE MOST POWERFUL ANTI-DEPRESSANT ON THE MARKET - by Alexis F. Hope

I like sleeping in the morning and not having to go to bed at any specific time. .. Image provide By: http://www.myspacedesigns.net/

My life is totally different than it was like when I taught school or before Tom died. I've had to learn what it is like to be single. I have had to learn what I like & what I don't like. I usually let Tom decide and make decisions as I really did not care about most things. If he was happy then I was happy. .. Image provide By: http://www.myspacedesigns.net/

We watched mainly what he liked on TV which was sports. I enjoyed them, but I would read while the games were on TV. If we went out to dinner and I wanted something specific, of course I would say, but normally I would say "you choose" and I would be very happy with whatever decision he made. I am very flexible and easy to get along with and don't mind doing what others want to do.

Since Tom died Kristi, oldest daughter and her son, Joey, have moved to the country. Kristi, my daughter and I home school my grandson Joey so he doesn't have to get up early either; we are all lazy in the morning.. It makes our mornings easy and comfortable. BUT THIS FALL 2008, he has decided to go to Middle school at the area school. I am disappointed, but he is ready! <

How many have your name?

I used to get up at 6:00 and rush around to get to work or get Joey off to school, but NONE of that anymore!! My days are fairly stress free. After coffee and petting & loving the cats, I "scoop" the cat litter boxes. I do the laundry, empty the dish washer and straighten up the house. After that is done, I sit here at the computer and start checking mail, yahoo360, myspace, amyloidosis sites and neopets. I usually have the TV on and watch/listen to Regis and Kelly at 9:00. I like to listen to Dr. Phil next, but after that I don't have anything for a while.

I usually have an afghan or blanket wrapped around me in chilly weather .....I still wear those Old turtle necks!....along with sweat pants and sweat shirts..... We have 2 kinds of heat - the furnace and electric wall board heat so each one can regulate our room temps. The living room, dining room and kitchen we keep at 68 and do what ever we want with the heat in our rooms.....

I love to hear the rain on the garage tin roof...I love the smell of bread baking, vanilla candles, peppermint leaves...baby powder.....

AND PARIS

I like talk radio when I am in the car, but classical music along with musicals would be my preference on FM...Sometimes I listen to country, but not like I used to......Country music is still tied into Tom so is hard to listen to for me yet......Actually I don't think I like it anymore! When Joey is in the car, I listen to his music and find it is not that bad!

I like....fall leaves - red, yellow, orange and brown....long walks in my woods....Old socks....deflated basketballs....reading glasses....the park....old cars....Paris...Uh OH I am getting nostalgic here with the basketballs and trips to Paris!!!,,,,,

I keep having this reacurring dream of "not being able to find Tom" - as soon as I think I see him or feel him, he disappears. I call him on the phone in this dream and hear the phone stop ringing like someone answered, but he never speaks.... I have a kitten named "Petie" who is a brush coat and when he is sitting on my shoulders, his tight wirey fur feels like Tom's beard.....interesting huh??

.....minature cars.......Midland City......Greenhills - where we used to live...... ..Sinclair ....memories....running...jogging ... running, running... memories of France.....Quebec City, working out together,,,,,,,,Montreal....camping........Chalmers Lane......minutes,,,, hours,,,,, days,,,,, months, ,,,years,,,,,memories is what is left...I am making new memories and new firsts......April 30 D DAY.........

I like my dogs who are frisky and happy (happiness is what it is all about!) I have 2 English Setters that are my babies and 1 border collie.

One is black and white named Larry Bird and the other is liver and white whose name is Lady Bird. Get it? Bird dogs! ....... There is a picture of Larry Bird & Lady Bird on the pix page..... We now have another dog, "HAPPY." We call her happy as she found a good home and she seemed sooooo HAPPY to be here, have a lot of love and good food! Oh HAPPY is a border collie. She has picked up the habits of the bird dogs and point birds then lunges across the yard after them... She is a better guard dog than the birders as they don't usually bark.

Why not ocme to my house and play with me? I love being petted and playing with balls, string and other toys.

Who I'd like to meet:

Winston Churchill, Napolean, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Monet, P.T. Barnum, King Ferdinand, Al Capone, George Washington, Grandma Coldiron, Grandpa Smith.....It might be interesting to meet my neighbors!...I lost 3 little grandbabies in 2000, I'd like to get to know them....Today April 14, 2008 there is no one I'd like to meet or see.

Most days I am fairly quiet and only leave my room to walk outside occasionally most often to get the mail. I know I need to exercise more and feel very quilty that I am so motionless, but I did walk a little this morning. Exercise is so tied into what Tom & I did together, but by this time I am using that as an excuse. I am lazy mostly. I do have a foot that pains me all the time which makes it hard to walk any distance. I went to the foot doctor on Tuesday and got a shot in my food. It helps it a little, but it still hurts. The doctor said the Lupus I have causes the joint to hurt which I knew. I've let my body get totally out of control and I know it!

A few times a week I go into town to visit my father who is 93 and to grocery shop. I even have Schwann come to the house so I don't have to shop!!!

Call it lazy or call it depression as it is what it is right now...On Tuesday I go to Rotary for lunch, which is group of business people in the area, who do service work in the community..It helps me to help others......

I have 1 grandson who has graduated from OSU and 1 grandson who is a Senior..... We are Buckeye football fans of course..... My big bathroom has a Buckeye waste basket, Buckeye shower curtain, poster and Buckeye flag...... GO BUCKS!!!

BILL GATES SPEECH:

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here's some advice. Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

If you can read this - Thank a teacher! If you are reading it in English -Thank a soldier!

TO ALL MY FAVORITE PEOPLE AND THERE REALLY AREN'T THAT MANY.
