The purpose of our group is to offer a faithful portrayal of the soldiers of a Confederate Artillery unit and the non-combatant persons who supported them. Organized to preserve the history and tradition of the American Civil War era, we participate in Living History Displays, Re-enactments, and other sundry occasions to educate and entertain the public and our membership.
The original Richmond Howitzers were founded in 1859 by George Wyeth Randolph, the grandson of Thomas Jefferson. This artillery until was known as Company 'H', 1st Virginia Regiment upon its incorporation into the Virginia militia system. When the Civil War broke out they became part of the Confederate States' Army and grew into a battalion of three companies by 1861. Serving with General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia, the elite Richmond Howitzers distinguished themselves in all the major battles of the War.

There are unique advantanges to joining an Artillery unit. Many artillery units welcome spouses and children as part of the group. Next is a true sense of teamwork and camaraderie. A well drilled gun crew acts almost as one. This comes from the repetion involved in clearing, loading, and firing a weapon of potential mass destruction. The public is naturally drawn to Artillery. Therefore, anyone in an Artillery unit is almost assured to be "center stage" at any event. If this sounds like something you'd like to learn more about, please email us!
