"Sullivan and co-writer Chris Kobin leave no stone unturned as they skew lesbianism, incest, bestiality, cannibalism, racism and homophobia in what seems like a calculated tactic to give the conservative members of the MPAA a collective heart attack. This Mason-Dixon Line gumbo of every conceivable taboo subject could have ended up as nothing more than a patchwork quilt of scenes slapped together for no other purpose than their mutual shock value, but the thread of black comedy that holds the film together makes 2001 Maniacs a coherent and campy orgy of blood, breasts and bogeymen, guaranteed to insight some serious laughter and surprising shake ups amongst the viewing audience."

"Fans of gore will be in heaven here- just see below for the largest Gore Score I've written yet for the site. The effects are great, all done in humorous ... and very stereotypical ways. The gay guy gets a spike up his ass, the black guy gets compressed in a cotton gin, etc. That adds to the enjoyment of the film... as it's so silly and ridiculous that you can't help but laugh."

"We NEED movies like this. They call us back to a place of innocence, where we weren’t so damn obsessed with watching for every opportunity to be offended. By borrowing so liberally from those two genres, 60’s gore and 80’s sex, Sullivan has made a movie that just might remind us that these things are supposed to be fun, that not every film has to make some grand social statement or pay tribute to the gods of political correctness. Sometimes it’s actually OK to sit back in a theater and laugh your head off at the stuff that we all think about but never talk about or do, because it’s socially unacceptable."
