| General | All forms of occultry and magic. I am astologer on the side, and leave me your birthday, times, and place. I collect them.
| | Music | 50's, 60's, and up to about Blondie and the Sex Pistols. Roy Orbison. After that, well, I really don't much about. Also, some classical; Bob Marley (one of the great religious leaders of the world); Pygmy; some Asian; and, of course, all that amazing Latin and Brazilian music. Cole Porter. Stephen Sondheim. There is one Indie group I have heard that is terrific: Check out Spiraling, who comes to me via my friend Aly. They are on my roster of friends. Very good band! Also, TV on the Radio. | | Movies | Godard and the Nouvelle Vague, Anna Karina, and Jean Seberg: "New York Herald Tribune! New York Herald Tribune!" Chinese films. Classic American cinema. | | Television | I do not watch commercial television. I have never seen Friends, Seinfeld, etc.. So it's HBO, SHO, and movies. | | Books | I have been reading a lot about 20th century Chinese history lately. I have to say that there is no country that has suffered as the Chinese and I particularly recommend Stillwell and the American Experience in China 1911-45 by Barbara Tuchman; Mao The Uknown Story by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday; and The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang.
Otherwise, I reread Leo Strauss continuously in no order. I reread, again, again, the Morning of the Magicians, a remarkable book. And you have to read Captain Alatriste and Purity of Blood by Prez-Reverte, the most swashbuckling books I have read. Sadly, I don't read Spanish, and so I have to wait for the series to come one book a year. All of Perez-Reverte's books are great. I go through Benardete a lot, and I intend to reread Proust later this spring.
And I have continue to reread Mallarmé as well as other poets. Also, rereading McLuhan. | | Heroes | Captain Alatriste. |

About me:
I am a left-wing Straussian who has moved from New York to Redondo Beach, California. I have to say that, because so-many so-called Straussians are so dreadfully conservative. In addition, I am a poet, a writer, a journalist, an astrologer, and a professor of journalism. I am Estonian and Kalmuck, which accounts for Eurasian appearance. I also have interests in philosophy, political philosophy, both Western and Eastern, at Taoist at heart insofar as the farces of Chung-tzu are wise. I barely read anything past the 17th century except for some poets and philosophers. I do have a favorite contemporary novelist, Arturo Perez-Reverete. I have been blogging, which means I write essays and short stories. I have been practicing my informal essay style as I feel the need to practice. My more formal writing style and argumentative rhetoric I exercise on the Leo Strauss list on Yahoo. My essays here are written mostly with my students, particularly my women students, in mind. I hope that you subscribe to my blog and comment on my essays as I am interested in what you think.

Witches. Any woman who actually reads Leo Strauss seriously, as I don't think there are any except his daughter and a Benardete protege. Britney Spears, whom I have finally given up disliking. Any womam born on October 14, 1977.
