Frayn uses a dual narrator in “Spies” which he alternates between throughout the novel. This has various effects including establishing a tone to the novel along with creating tension and intrigue. The hindsight of the older Stephen often gives an ironic and therefore humorous tone to the events of Stephen’s childhood that are being narrated. This retrospect also proves to establish the genre of the novel later on. Moreover, the theme of appearance and reality emerges; the narrator’s detachment creates a sinister tone to chapters 2 and 3. Another role of the dual narrator is to create tension and intrigue. Through seeing the events of child Stephen’s life from what the elder narrator can remember, we follow a thought trail rather than a direct story. The narrator’s confusion creates confusion in the reader and leaves them intrigued as to what will happen next; why are all these events significant to the main plot? Stephen is presented to the reader through the tension, intrigue, irony and humour created through Frayn’s use of a dual narrator.
Chapter 2 of “Spies” opens with the older narrator who has just arrived at “the Close”. The description he gives of the child Stephen whom he is looking back ..s to create intrigue for the reader. Stephen is described as “unsatisfactory” and there is said to be “something not quite right about him and his family”. The reader is keen to discover why Stephen is apparently so different. Moreover the detached way that the older Stephen narrates this description makes us wonder why he is so and why he appears to dislike himself so much. Frayn uses rhetorical questions to the same effect: “what do I feel about him as I watch him now?”. This draws the audience’s attention in to the description and creates some tension as to why there is this clear detachment in the older narrator’s approach to his child self. Another method Frayn uses to create tension and intrigue, thus presenting Stephen to the reader, is the withholding of
