  • Bio

Born 7/14/86, grew up in West Barnet, Vermont. I've been playing since I was five years old (although only taking private instruction since I was about 9 or 10), and have played with different groups such as the Vermont Jazz Ensemble, Alex Toth and the Lazybirds, Roku (still goin' strong with that group after FOUR YEARS!!!), the Soulvation Army, and other groups. I went to Lyndon Institute, where my music director John Padden taught me everything I needed to come into Burlington ready to play. I've taken private lessons with Eileen Rossetti (thank you so much for everything you did to get me started on the right track!!!!!) and Jeff Salisbury, both of whom have taught me so much. I'm at UVM now, where I've played in the Big Band and Post Bop Ensembles. I've gotten to work with such amazing artists throughout my life as Randy Brecker, Maynard Ferguson, Wynton Marsalis, Arturo O'Farrill, Maria Schneider, Dave Holland, Branford Marsalis, Bobby Watson, and Rufus Reid (on several occasions, and Mr. Reid, thank you for everything you've taught me). Music is my life, it's what I do, and I don't know where I'd be without it. Thank y'all for listening.
  • Members

ROKU - Russ Flynn (bass, compositions), Andy Allen (saxophones), Andy Mallon (vibraphone), Bryan McCarthy (saxophones), Matt Jalbert (guitar). I would also like to mention longtime members Justin Monsen (guitar, compositions) and Ari Diaconis (percussion), both of whom also spent a good deal of time doing the business end of Roku, as well as Alex Wolston (trumpet) and Shaun Feeley (saxophones). Thanks guys. THE LAZYBIRDS- Alex Toth (trumpet, compositions), AnnaKalmia Traver (saxohones, vocals, compositions), Geoff Kim (guitar, compositions), Russ Flynn (bass, compositions), Peter Krag (piano, compositions). John Rogone was the bassist for a while before Russ signed on. I also wrote one tune, which you can hear on my profile. Also Ari Diaconis sat in with us on several gigs on percussion. THE SOULVATION ARMY - There are a lot of people who filtered in and out of this band, so bear with me: Mike Gorgone (vocals), Sean O'Donnell (a.k.a OD, vocals) Will Kirk (guitar, vocals), Paddy Reagan (guitar, vocals), John Rogone (bass, vocals), Peter Krag (piano), Tyson Valyou (percussion), Ari Diaconis (percussion), Chris Diasparra (bari sax), Karl Zahn (alto sax), James Brakeley (trumpet). I apologize to all those who came before me, but for the sake of space I only listed those who were in the band when I was in it. All the other wonderful musicians I've had a chance to play with - Bryan McNamara (alto sax), Joe Davidian (piano), PJ Davidian (drums/percussion), Rob Morse (bass), Alex Wolston (trumpet), Anthony Santor (bass), Nick Cassarino (guitar), Myra Flynn (vocals), Matt Wright (vocals), Bear Irwin (trombone), George Voland (trombone), Rich Davidian (alto sax and woodwinds), all the other members of the Vermont Jazz Ensemble, Andy Moroz (trombone). If I've forgotten anyone else, I apologize, just holler so I can give you your due props. Thank you all for helping to shape the music I play.

  • Sounds Like

This is where I hold off on my judgment. I think this is an area where rather than say "I sound like so and so......", I would like to quote someone saying "Dan sounds like so and so....." . It seems rather arrogant to say I sound like someone or somebody else.
