sometimes its groovy, sometimes its heavy, sometimes its bluesy, sometimes its hard to say..... I've spent at least 5 years not being able to answer this question....sorry
21-Outs are a 3 piece hard-rock band. Their music is loud, honest, engaging and soulful with strong blues and grunge influences. All songs are written and arranged by front man Philip Cassidy, who, at only 23, has been playing and performing live in venues across Ireland for the past 9 years.
Before 21 Outs, Philip had built up a strong reputation in Galway for his energetic solo show where the odd smashed guitar followed by a standing ovation wasn’t uncommon. This eventually led to an appearance on RTE’s Nationwide.
“I was absolutely mad for gigging at that stage, I’d been out of bands for a while and doing the DIY recording thing was starting to get on my nerves…the real buzz comes from playing live and I needed a serious fix…..”
“…. I’d end my set by launching my guitar off the stage, people went mad for it…I just knew it was time to get a band together”
The band (originally a four piece consisting of Philip Cassidy, Kevin Liffey , Bryan Rabbitte and Shane McDonnell) formed in late July 2007.
A hard working practise regime was scheduled which led to their first gig at the end of August, Their first studio session the day after and their second gig after their session. It was an intense start but they haven’t lost their pace since.
With relentless live gigs, 21 Outs immediately established themselves on the Galway music scene playing just about every venue and appearing in just about every newspaper in the City. When 21 Outs weren’t gigging they were in the studio working on their Demo turned EP turned LP.
The guys branched out and began appearing in some very well known Dublin venues and before they knew it they were jetting over to France to headline a Concert in the AuxerrEXPO in Auxerre, Bourgogne in March 2008.
A gig in the Roisin Dubh on April 2nd 2008 would see the end of 21 Outs as a four piece when things with guitarist Shane proved to not work out. It was around this time when frontman Philip decided to bring things back to the drawing board.
Philip, Bryan and Kevin began working on their sound and continued recording what then would be Demo turned EP turned LP turned Pre-Production….
“…we said f**k it, we’re going to do this right or nothing at all so we scrapped the idea of releasing the LP and booked into Temple Lane Studios for July"
Temple Lane Studios are among the top recording studios in Ireland with past clients including Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Phil Lynnot, Paddy Casey, Mundy, The Redneck Manifesto, David Gray, The Revs, The Flaws, The Blizzards, Bellx1, Future Kings of Spain, Jack L, JJ72, Juliet Turner, Snow Patrol, Royseven, The Frames, The Walls, Shane McGowan, Republic of Loose, Sinead O'Connor........the list is endless.
During April and May rehearsals they equipped themselves with a Bus and a PA and scheduled for June a nationwide tour with the goal of finding their sound as a 3 piece. Shows ranged from intimate all ages gigs, the usual Irish original music hotspots and a nice big open air headline in Galways Eyre Square.
The tour went well and completing the last date the lads found themselves in Temple Lane Studios the next day where the real hard work began. To sum up the session their producers Johnny King and John Henry got 20 odd hours sleep in 8 days and Philip didn’t celebrate his 23rd birthday :-(
“it was a very intense session… we were a new band at the end of it… the thing is we’re still not finished…we blew our budget but we would prefer to do it right rather than rush it”
21 Outs started to see their hard work pay off when the they found gigs were being thrown at them from all directions. This would give the lads a chance to regroup after the studio and now they find themselves turning down gigs in order to make time to finish their album.
“We hate having to turn down gigs. It's a sin but It’s got to the stage where we want to have something to promote. There’s nothing worse than having people come up to you after a gig looking for a CD and having nothing to give them. We’re not happy giving away the demo because it’s ancient and we’ve gotten alot tighter since. We just want to get it done but it has to be right. That being said we still will be playing, just not as frequently as usual. It makes more sense to spend more time in the studio for now”
“….we are are very thankful to our fans, especially those who have started to follow us around the country to see our gigs. It’s crazy…. We are really buzzed about them, they remind us why we keep striving to complete the album and keep playing. We hope that it’s worth the wait for them”
The band has already achieved so much in the short time they have been together, which is testament to their drive and determination. 21-outs have something different to offer the static music scene in Ireland, they also have the charisma, talent and the ambition to succeed.
They are known for their hard-working and professional attitude, and deserve to be given a chance to showcase their music to a larger audience.
21-outs are going to make a name for themselves within the Irish music scene throughout the next couple of years, so keep an eye out for a gig in your town
